Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cumberland Men's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to No. 11 Indiana Tech

Fort Wayne, Ind.-- Cumberland men's volleyball drops season opener to No. 11 Indiana Tech.
In their first match of the 2024 season, the Phoenix battled against a strong Top-25 offense, who played a nearly perfect match. The Warriors totaled just three attacking errors all game long, hitting an impressive .500 as a team. Cumberland was held to just a .133 team attack percentage.
In his first appearance as a Phoenix, Jacob Whyte gave a strong performance with a game-high 14 kills. Libero Caleb Ginnings led all players with eight digs, while Sam Mannebach added four kills, eight assists, and five digs.
The Warriors wasted no time establishing their dominance, capitalizing on consecutive Cumberland errors to take an early lead. Playing flawlessly at the net, Indiana Tech pushed the deficit out to six points before the Phoenix attempted to stop the momentum with a timeout.
After the break, Kix Ferrell sparked energy for Cumberland with a powerful ten-foot swing, only to be matched quickly by a snap from Tech's Raewok Roger.
As the set drew to a close, the Warriors continued to leverage their size advantage and challenge CU's defenders with dominating attacks. Their relentless offense resulted in an 8-2 surge in the final push.
Despite Ferrell connecting on another fast swing, an untimely CU service error ended the set with a 25-13 score.
The Phoenix took their first lead of the game in set two after kills from Sam Mannebach and Whyte combined with Ginnings' service ace for a 5-4 game.
After a trio of kills, the Warriors wrestled back control, establishing a lead that they held onto for the remainder of the set. The Phoenix stayed within four points of the Warriors throughout the middle stages and narrowed the score to one at 20-19 with a three-point run.
Back-to-back errors at the net stalled Cumberland's momentum, however, and with a final kill from the outside, Tech took the set 25-22.
The Warriors took over the third frame with a quick 5-1 run, maintaining composure as the set unfolded.
The Phoenix were haunted by attacking errors all set long, registering their lowest percentage of the match at -.048. Tech's attackers connected on 11 of their 16 swings, keeping their side of the net clean as they cruised through the set.
The Warriors sealed the game with a final block from Armaan Dosanjh and Arezzio Rietti, securing a convincing 25-15 win.
Cumberland will stay on the road as they head to Mishiwaka for a two-day tournament at Bethel University. The team will first face Judson University tomorrow at 6:00 PM CT before taking on Culver-Stockton University and Calumet College St. Joseph on Saturday, February 10.
