Phoenix Comeback Effort Falls Just Short Against Blue Raiders

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Phoenix were back on home floor to wrap up the season series against Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders, having dropped their game on the road earlier this season. Going on runs back and forth, it took a strong effort in the end to pull away from the Phoenix, but Lindsey would take the season series, winning 74-64.

Kayla Gordon led the charge for Cumberland with 18 points, despite a rocky start to the game, and also grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Lindsey Freeman (14) and Emaleigh Tarpley (13) also helped the Phoenix offensively, though their defensive effort helped propel Cumberland to have the game that they did.

Each team went back and forth for the first several minutes, making contested midrange shots in pairs, with little separating one from the other. Uncharacteristically, Kayla Gordon struggled to make contested shots around the rim like she often does, forcing the scoring to spread further.

After one quarter, Emaleigh Tarpley led the way for the Phoenix shooting two-for-two, while several other players chipped in with a single basket, though CU had to go into the second quarter down 17-10.

The second quarter did little to help the Phoenix, seeing Cumberland struggling to stop the hot hand that seemingly every Blue Raider had. CU converted on three of their attempts from the field, but their opponents managed a strong 5-8 from beyond the arc and finished the quarter up big, 37-19.

With a deficit like that to come back from, the Phoenix had to be firing early and often to start the third quarter. Straight out of the gates Lindsey Freeman took over, scoring six straight points of her own and within two minutes the home fans were rallying behind the comeback effort.

After trailing by 18 to begin the second half, Freeman and Gordon combined for 14 points to cut the deficit back down eight points. Just as all the momentum was on the side of the Phoenix, Sydney Hall of the Blue Raiders took a pull-up three pointer to slow the game briefly.

As the quarter continued to run, Lindsey Wilson began to find their shooting stroke again, though the second and third quarters were a tale of two teams with the Phoenix jumping out to a 25-11 run as the final two minutes approached. Gordon and Freeman were marauding the whole of the third, combining for over twenty points and helping aid one of Cumberland's largest scoring quarters of the season.

While the first three quarters offered large scoring outbursts, the fourth slowed things down greatly and each team settled down into their halfcourt sets. Tarpley looked like a star in the making to begin the half, leading both teams in scoring for some time and putting her hustle and defensive ability on display.

Cumberland kept up the aggressiveness that helped to get them back in the game, but it seemed as though every time the Phoenix had the momentum, a Blue Raider would hit a timely shot to cool things back down.

As the final minutes came and went, Cumberland could do little to stop the offense that Lindsey Wilson threw at them, extending the gap back to ten points by the time the buzzer sounded, reading 74-64.

Cumberland will be back at home next Thursday to face off against the current No. 20 team in the nation, Freed-Hardeman University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 on February, 15th.
