Women's Basketball Falls to Georgetown in MSC Quarterfinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-- No. 11 Georgetown knocks Cumberland out of the Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament with an 85-67 quarterfinals victory.

The Phoenix faced a deficit of up to 22 points but managed to slow down the Tigers in the final two quarters. Despite their efforts, including narrowly missing a three-pointer that would have cut the lead to ten points in the fourth quarter, they were unable to overcome their early disadvantage.

Most of the game's action occurred inside the paint, with only five total three-pointers made between the teams. Cumberland shot 43.1% from inside, making 22 of 51 attempts, while Georgetown shot slightly better at 51.6%, going 33 for 64.

Cumberland's success at the free-throw line kept them competitive, shooting an impressive 70.0% by making 21 of 30 attempts. However, the Phoenix were out-rebounded 39-23.

Kayla Gordon and Lindsey Freeman led Cumberland in scoring, with Gordon scoring 19 points and Freeman adding 16 points and five rebounds. Emaleigh Tarpley contributed ten points, going a perfect 4-4 from the line, while Faith Colston chipped in nine points and five boards.

Georgetown's Izzy Lamparty led all players with 22 points and six rebounds. The Tigers had three other players shoot in double figures.

The Tigers started strong, scoring a layup on the opening possession and forcing a steal for another quick bucket. Despite their early push, the Phoenix kept pace, staying within two possessions for the first six minutes.

Georgetown turned up the pressure in the final two minutes of the first quarter, using aggressive defense to build a ten-point lead. Cumberland struggled to find good shots, but Gordon and Freeman managed to keep the deficit in single digits with a jumper and a layup to end the quarter.

In the second, the Tigers extended their lead to 16 with a 6-0 run. Cumberland finally broke their scoring drought with a three-pointer from Tarpley after a timeout.
Freeman's and-one brought the Phoenix within 12, but Georgetown continued to score effectively inside. By halftime, they had converted 16 points off 11 turnovers, shooting an impressive 63.3% from the field.

Georgetown dominated the start of the third quarter, extending their lead to 22 by scoring inside and at the free-throw line. However, Cumberland mounted a comeback, going on a 7-0 run fueled by JC Swafford's layup and Colston's and-one, cutting the lead to 16.

The Phoenix battled to keep the Tigers' lead under 20 points by drawing fouls and capitalizing on their free-throw opportunities. Cumberland outscored Georgetown in the quarter, sinking nine of their 12 from at the line. However, the Tigers maintained an 18-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Cumberland had their strongest start of the game, scoring nine points to cut the difference to 12 at 69-57. However, at the 5:00 minute mark, Georgetown extended their lead to 17 with a 4-0 run.

They maintained a lead of at least 15 until the end, ending Cumberland's season with a score of 85-67.
