Tigers Get the Better of the Phoenix in Game Three

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland baseball team could not take the series victory over Georgetown in their conference opener, falling 23-2 in game three.

The Tigers had revenge on their mind after the Phoenix jumped on them in the second game of the doubleheader yesterday evening. Back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases for Jarrett Chapman of Georgetown, who sent a ball over the left field fence, taking a 4-0 lead with only one out.

Another pair of singles put runners on the corners and smart base running from the Tigers saw a single score two more runs, extending the deficit further. By the time the inning was gone and done, Georgetown had pulled out to a 10-0 lead.

Stoney Smith answered with a single in the bottom of the inning, though the Tigers kept the Phoenix shutout. Georgetown played more small ball with a single and a stolen base, leading to back to back sacrifice flies to push a runner across.

Again in the third inning Georgetown pushed a runner across, as Alex Smith came in with the bases loaded and one out, but escaped with minimal damage. Cumberland would not find a breakthrough until the bottom of the fourth inning.

Dee Triplett and Preston Welchel both walked to begin the inning, making way for back to back flyouts, pushing Triplett across the plate on a tag-up. GC kept their bats hot for most of the game, not scoring in just a single inning of the run-rule shortened game.

In the time it took CU to score their next run, Georgetown managed 9 nine more, making the gap 23-1. Stoney Smith stepped up the plate with the bases loaded and worked an eight pitch at-bat into an RBI from a walk.

Overall, the game was one to forget for the Phoenix, who allowed twenty hits and could not manage to take the series victory.

The Phoenix will have just two days to regather themselves before they take on the current No. 6 team in the nation in Lebanon, Tennessee Wesleyan. First pitch is schuedled for 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 19th.
