Phoenix take Two From Cleary to Open Up Weekend Series

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball wins the first two games of the series against Cleary to stretch the win streak to six-straight wins, winning game one 7-5 and game two 8-0 behind a complete game shutout from Ethan Torres. 

The Phoenix got on the board first in game one as Tim Holyk and Dee Triplett hit back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead. 

After the early lead the Cougars would score the next five runs. Cleary scored one in the second on an RBI groundout, plated another in the third on a triple off the right field wall, and pushed across three in the fifth after an untimely two-out error. The first run scored on the two out throwing error followed by two-RBI double to extend the lead to 5-1 going to the bottom of the fifth. 

Alonzo Zuniga led off the bottom half with a single up the middle. The next batter, Ian Krump belted his first home run of the season to center field to cut into the lead. Three batters later, Holyk hit a solo shot to get the Phoenix within a run trailing 5-4. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Krump drew a walk to put two runners on and Javier Beal blasted a three run home run to take the lead 7-5. 

Reliever Brennyn Abendroth did the rest, facing six batters and throwing two complete innings with four strikeouts to get the win. Carter Rost started the game for Cumberland throwing five innings allowing six hits, five runs, two earned, and striking out five. 

Game two was all about Ethan Torres on the mound. Torres registered his first complete game as a Phoenix shutting out the Cougars. He struck out three, walked three, and allowed five hits. 

The Phoenix again struck early. Brandon Boxer drew a leadoff walk and then an errant pickoff throw allowed him to go third base. Stoney Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Boxer and give Cumberland a 1-0 lead. 

In the third, Boxer singled up the middle and Holyk drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Beal roped a double to left to score both runners and extend the lead to 3-0. 

Cumberland pushed across another run in the fourth inning. Trenton Duchsherer singled and his courtesy runner Ty Martin stole second. Krump doubled Martin home for a 4-0 lead. 

The Phoenix scored four more in the sixth to put the game away. Duchsherer doubled home a run, Boxer hit an RBI fielder's choice, and Smith singled in two more for the final score of 8-0. 

The Phoenix and Cougars will finish out the series with two games tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m.
