Softball Cannot Find Way Past Patriots in Second Half of Series

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland softball team hosted the University of the Cumberlands for their final two games of their MSC series and would fall in both games.

The Patriots started off how they ended yesterday, scoring runs early and often. Three out of the first four batters reached, loading the bases for Amber Atkins, who drove in a two-run double with a single to right center.

Another single gave the Cumberlands a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the first inning. Morgan Radford pitched a gem in the inning and that momentum carried the Patriots forward, scoring two more runs in the top of the following inning, widening the gap.

In total, the Cumberlands were able to score seven runs through five innings before the Phoenix would manage to put a hit on the board. Breaking up Radford's perfect game, Karsyn France slapped a single over the second baseman and Sara Brogdon went back-to-back with her, putting two on with two outs.

As little was going the way of Cumberland, Abbie Peach got a hold of a ball but the wind held up in the air for the third out. Cumberlands scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Phoenix in danger of being run-ruled, and the game ended that way, 8-0.

Carley Clinard pitched well to open up game two of the day, not allowing a hit in the first inning, and went through three innings without allowing a run, though the Patriots would break the walls down in the fourth. Three straight singles were all driven in from an Emily Bryant grand slam, culminating in a six run inning for the Pats.

Adding to their lead in the following inning, Cumberlands again ran their lead out to eight runs, which would again be enough for the run rule to take effect.

The Phoenix take on Augustana College in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of the first game scheduled for 1:00 PM.
