MIDWAY, Ky.-- Cumberland men's volleyball completed a successful regular-season sweep over conference foe Midway on the road. The Phoenix secured victory in straight sets, dominating on the offensive with more than double the kill count of their opponents.
Cumberland's attackers were instrumental in the win, amassing a total of 43 kills in the match. Meanwhile, the CU's defenders held Midway to just 20 kills on .027% attacking. Jacob Whyte led all hitters with ten kills, with Kix Ferrell and Joseph Akeo contributing seven kills each for the Phoenix. Caleb Ginnings picked up ten digs while
Alexander Heuer added 37 assists, six digs, and two aces.Â
The Eagles struggled offensively early in the match, plagued by errors at the net throughout the first frame.
After an initial back-and-forth, the Phoenix seized control with a 6-1 run, establishing a commanding 14-8 lead. However, late errors from Cumberland's net and serving line allowed the Eagles to narrow the gap, cutting the lead to just three points.
In the final push, Cumberland rallied for a 5-2 run that included four kills at the pins, securing a 25-19 victory set one victory. With this late surge, the Phoenix attackers more than doubled Midway's kill count and finished with an impressive .304 team attack percentage.
Midway capitalized on Cumberland's errors in the second set, with all of their first five points coming from Cumberland mistakes, leading to a 5-5 tie before the Eagles had any attacking attempts. However, once the Cumberland front row found their groove, they surged ahead with four unanswered points, distancing themselves from the Eagles.
The Phoenix maintained a steady lead of at least two points during the frame's middle stages. However, their errors resurfaced, allowing the Eagles to level the score at 19-19.Â
Following a brief exchange of kills, the Phoenix regained control, closing out the set with four straight unanswered points for a 25-22 finish.Â
The Eagles led early on in the third frame, once again collecting their opening points from miscues by the Phoenix. Cumberland, however, made a swift recovery, heading on a 5-0 run during which Ferrell connected on a pair of swings.
From that run on, the Phoenix seized control of the game, maintaining momentum while Midway struggled, posting their lowest attacking percentage of the match at -.036. With a final decisive swing from Kaden Kuehler, the Phoenix completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory.
Cumberland will head back on the road next Tuesday, April 2 to take on Brescia with a 6:00 PM CT start time.
