Women's Volleyball starts 1-1 at the Emileigh Jo Cooper Memorial Classic

LEBANON, TENN.-- The Phoenix ended day one of the Emileigh Jo Cooper Memorial Classic 1-1.


In game one at the Emileigh Jo Cooper Memorial Classic against Shawnee State, the Phoenix dominated. Cumberland only trailed within the first point of the game. After the first point set one was controlled by the Phoenix going on a 18-5 point run which was finished out by a Lila Cade kill to take the set 25-15.

The second set was much different while the Bears of Shawnee State started the set on a nine to zero run. The Phoenix fought hard and ended up coming back within four points led by a Haley Mitchell kill, but the Bears pulled away in the end finishing the second set 25-18.

The third set went back and forth between the Phoenix and the Bears. Both teams shared multiple three point runs to tie the games back and forth until CU pulled ahead 24-19 almost closing out set three. The Bears fought back and brought it within two at 24-22. The Phoenix dodged the comeback and won set three 25-22, finished by slam of kill by Hailey Jones. 

Set four also started out in a back and forth battle with Cumberland trailing by one at most until the Bears went on a 12-4 run to make it a 20-12 match. The Phoenix pulled in some late set points and a big time kill by Hailey Jones and brought it back within five before the Bears won set four 25-18.

The fifth set was another set that went both ways the whole set. The Phoenix defense played well this set with five blocks that sparked the offense to finish a very close and determining set with a Hazel Konkel kill to secure another victory 15-11.

Haley Mitchell led the Phoenix in the kills column tallying up 14 kills. She was followed closely by Hazel Konkel with 12 and Lila Cade with 10 giving CU three girls with double digit kills. Manoella Gomes and Emma Chavers were spectacular today as well, combining for 41 assists. In the dig column, Elaine Shaneyfelt, Skylar Rivers and Bryleigh Yarbrough all combined for an outstanding 48 digs. 

After a great victory in match one against the Bears of Shawnee State, the Phoenix battled hard in set one against Rio Grande University tying the game eight different times in set one. The set was back and forth the entire set and Rio Grande ended up taking set one 25-22.

In set two, Cumberland jumped ahead quickly leading the RedStorm 6-2 led by a Sydney Andrews kill. The rest of the set was a deficit of no more than three until the Phoenix pulled ahead 19-15 and then Rio Grande tied it 25-25. The RedStorm ended up finishing the set with a win 27-25.

Set three was a very fast start for Cumberland started by a slam of a kill by Haley Mitchell which led to 13-3 lead. The Phoenix kept fighting and stayed strong until Rio Grande went on a run to make it 23-22 CU. Cumberland ends the set with an electric block by Hailey Jones and Lila Cade.

In the final set of the day, the Phoenix started very slow and got behind early 11-5. CU dug deep and fought back within two making the score 16-14 RGU; However, Rio Grande pulled away again and the Phoenix fell in match two 25-17. 

Hazel Konkel led the Phoenix in kills with 11. She was trailed by Lila Cade and Haley Mitchell with 9 and 7 a piece. Konkel and Hailey Jones both had six blocks and Manoella Gomes followed closely behind with five. Elaine Shaneyfelt led the way with 10 digs and she was trailed by Emma Chavers with nine and Morgan Snead with seven. 

The Phoenix will have a quick turnaround as they play West Virginia University Institute of Technology tomorrow at 11:00 AM and Ohio Christian University at 1:30 PM.
