Women's Soccer Pass Top Ten Test with Flying Colors

MARIETTA, Ga. - - The Cumberland women's soccer team kept their hot streak alive in Georgia, taking down the undefeated Life University Running Eagles.

Life found the first goal of the game after the Phoenix looked to be in charge through the opening moments of the game, outshooting the Running Eagles three shots to one. Cumberland stayed positive and despite going down early the Phoenix were all over the no. 6 ranked team.

Leveling the game just over four minutes later, Cumberland took advantage of an Ao Yamada corner kick and Kadisha Martina got on the end of it to bring the Phoenix right back into the game. After the ball was fumbled around the box the keeper was forced to make a save, though her save rebounded out to the graduate transfer who smashed the ball off the bar and down into the net.

Scoring again three minutes later, Martina linked up with this past week's Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Gabby Jones, giving Cumberland the lead. Jones looked like she was taking on all four Running Eagle defenders by herself but Martina was giving a supporting run down the right side, where Jones would find her with a killer ball and make it 2-1.

Cumberland looked comfortable in the away sides half and although there were several counters, they took a lead, along with all of the momentum, into the second half.

Just as things were looking up for the Phoenix though, disaster would strike. After a short pass from the back Celia Rodriguez was forced to stretch for a tackle to stop a quick counter, but in doing so she brought down a player who was through on goal and was thus given a red card.

Going a player down is never an easy task to handle, the Phoenix however stepped up when they were needed and both Itziar Garcia and Ella Tuplin manned the back line. Dealing with pressure well, there were times that one might have confused Life for the team being short on numbers.

As if her past week hadn't been fruitful enough, Gabby Jones was the player who would cement the Phoenix's biggest victory of the season. With the Running Eagles sending everyone forward searching for a late goal, the senior stepped on a Seika Ikezoe pass and belted a left footed shot off the bar and in.

Life continued to throw numbers ahead but Cumberland came out the better in this matchup, taking down the no. 6 ranked Running Eagles and keeping their unbeaten season alive for another game.

Cumberland has yet another big test coming this weekend, traveling to Indiana to take on Marian University who are currently ranked no. 17, though another poll will come out tomorrow.
