Phoenix Run Wild in 41-6 Victory over St. Andrews

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Football rushes for 339 yards as the Phoenix rout St. Andrews 41-6 in the home opener at Nokes-Lasater Field.

The rain held off for most of the game, but that didn't stop CU from putting up 41 points. The team totaled 491 yards of total offense with 339 on the ground and 152 in the air. Jeremiah Bryant scampered for three touchdowns on 15 carries for 123 yards. Jacob Cornejo made his debut at tailback rushing for 120 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Luke Holloway got in on the action with a touchdown and 61 yards rushing. Holloway also threw for 152 yards and completed 10-of-13 and had two picks. Jarrius Rogers also scored one touchdown on a one yard touchdown rush.

The defense held St. Andrews to just 176 yards of total offense with 72 yards coming one big play in the fourth quarter. The Knights rushed for 95 yards in the game and completed 6-of-16 passes for 81 yards. Boston Follis lead the team in tackles picking up eight in the afternoon. Dez Wallace, Derek Taylor, and Jayden Jobe each had four. Kane Burnley and Joey Samples each recovered a fumble in the win.

The Phoenix got the scoring going as CU rewarded freshman Jacob Cornejo with his first career touchdown to cap a 71-yard drive.

Cumberland started their next drive in plus territory as they went after the punt and forced them to rush it around the edge for the tackle. Four plays later, Bryant found an opening for a 28-yard touchdown rush and 14-0 lead in the first.

To start the second quarter, the Phoenix were driving, but Holloway tossed an interception in the endzone to stop the drive. Fortunately, Cumberland quickly got the ball back again in plus territory after a bad snap on the punt. Cumberland had to settle for a deep field goal try from Jack Kantner that he pulled just left.

Cumberland would tack on one more score just before the half ended. CU got possession with about a minute left in the half. Holloway threw a 52 yard to the two-yard line. Two plays later, Bryant punched in his second score of the afternoon for a 21-0 lead at the half.

The Phoenix started with the ball in the second half and Rogers took the kick off to the St. Andrews 42 to set up a touchdown drive. Cumberland converted a key fourth down as Holloway threw a 16-yard pass to Isaiah Douglas. A few plays later, Rogers was rewarded with a one-yard touchdown rush around to outside for a 28-0 lead with 10:14 left in the third.

Joey Samples recovered a fumble inside the St. Andrews 20-yard line which set up a 24-yard touchdown rush by Holloway to extend the lead to 35-0 before the fourth.

Cumberland added one more touchdown in the fourth on a 39-yard touchdown rush from Bryant. The PAT was no good for a 41-0 lead.

St. Andrews scored on a 72-yard touchdown rush for their lone score. The Knights went for two, but failed to convert it for the 41-6 final score.

Cumberland will be back in action next Saturday as the Phoenix host Florida Memorial at 1:30 p.m.
