Women's Volleyball improves to 2-0 in conference play

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland Women's Volleyball improves to 2-0 in conference play after a road win against Bethel University. 

Set one was a back and forth battle from the start. The lead was traded multiple times until the Phoenix went on a small run to go up 10-8. Hazel Konkel led CU to go up three points with a huge block making the score 13-10. The Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to make the score 22-17 and soon after their run, finished set one with a victory 25-19. 

Cumberland started fast in set two leading 3-0. The Wildcats of Bethel fought back and tied the score at five a piece and it was back and forth until the Phoenix went on a 3-0 run leading the Wildcats 12-9. Bethel traded runs with CU and went on a small run to tie the score at 13-13. The rest of set two was small runs by both the Phoenix and the Wildcats. Bethel outlasted the Phoenix in a hard fought set two 25-23. 

Set three started in favor of CU going on a small run taking the lead by three. The hot start was followed by small runs by the Phoenix and Bethel to keep it tied or within one until both teams tied it at seven apiece. Cumberland went on a three point run to make the score 10-7. The Phoenix dominated the rest of the set and went on a big run led by a Lila Cade kill to secure the third set victory 25-19. 

Set four was ignited by a 6-0 run by the Phoenix. Bethel fought their way back from being down six, and brought it within one point with the score being 8-7 for the Phoenix lead. After a huge block by Manoella Gomes, the Phoenix led 11-8. The Wildcats fought back and erased the deficit to tie the set at 11 apiece and it was back and forth until the Phoenix led by two with a score of 18-16. A huge block by Konkel and Gomes gave the Phoenix a three point lead at 21-18. A set of kills by Konkel and Alei Roper secured the victory 25-21 for the Phoenix in four sets to move to 2-0 in conference play. 

The Phoenix are back in action September 21st against Talladega College and Fisk University in a tri-match in Nashville, Tenn. at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM
