Women's Volleyball Wrap Up AC Invite with Another Split on the Day

GRAND RAPID, Mich. - - Cumberland share their honors as they take home two wins and two losses after strong competition at Aquinas Cornerstone Invite.

Starting off their day on the right foot, Cumberland were no match for the Saints of St. Francis. Kills were well distributed throughout the lineup, though Lila Cade led the match with nine. Hazel Konkel continued her massive defensive campaign with eight blocks, while Emma Chavers and Elaine Shaneyfelt both recorded 20+ assists and digs respectively.

Set one actually started in favor of the Saints as they pulled ahead five points to none before CU then went on their own four point run. Each team went on several small runs before swapping points to get all the way to 19-19, where the Phoenix would then never look back, winning six straight points off Nicole Roeder's serve.

The second frame was similar to the first, seeing both teams go on small streaks to pull ahead of the other. It looked as though USF might pull out a set victory of the Phoenix at 17-14, but a Hazel Konkel kill switched the momentum right back to Cumberland. After trailing by as many as four points in the set, the Phoenix won six of the final ten points to take a 2-0 lead, winning off a Konkel/Roper block.

Cumberland looked to take home their second win of the Invite with a third set victory, though they had to earn it. Trailing to start the set, CU again had to battle their way back into the lead, but once they were in the driver's seat they never let up off the gas. Leading by as many as seven points in the final set, the Phoenix were able to dispatch the Saints in three, 25-19, 26-24, 25-19.

The second game of the day was not so kind to the Phoenix, falling in three sets after a sweep of their own. Konkel kept up her strong year with another team-leading game in kills, while Elaine Shaneyfelt led the match in digs.

Opening the match on the front foot it was actually Cumberland who were pulling ahead early, though Cornerstone were there knocking on the door. Getting all the way to 18-18 it looked like it could have been anyone's match, the Golden Eagles however pulled out a 25-20 win.

Continuing to be a game of runs, the second set was level all the way up to 11-11, then the madness began. Cornerstone pulled ahead 15-11, then Cumberland pulled it back to 15-15, then Cornerstone pulled back out to an 18-15 lead. The Golden Eagles pulled out to a 22-18 lead and when it looked like they were running away with it, Hazel Konkel smashed a kill to start a rally. Managing to make it 22 all, the pressure was on Cornerstone and they stepped up to the challenge, taking the set 25-23.

The third and final set looked just like the two before it did, matching up at 10-10, but the Phoenix seemed to run out of gas after chasing the first two frames. Winning five points on the bounce, the Golden Eagles built up a lead which Cumberland could never find a way past. Ending 25-16, Cornerstone made sure the Phoenix didn't return home with three wins from the Grand Rapids gymnasium.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Tuesday for their first home game in a month, taking part in a tri-match with Lane College and MSC rival Freed-Hardeman.
