Lions Take Down Phoenix in Conference Action

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team welcomed the no. 8 ranked Freed-Hardeman Lions to Lebanon for tonight's Mid-South matchup.

Freed-Hardeman started the game just how they would've wanted with Carissa Curtis and Kaylee Odom scoring with efficiency early, putting up nine points to the Phoenix's two through five minutes of play. The lone score of the game through that time came from an Ever Walker coast-to-coast steal and layup, which also drew a foul though she did not convert on the free throw.

Cumberland kept themselves in the game defensively, not allowing the Lions to run away with the game but struggled to score points as it sat at 14-6 with a quarter gone. During the second frame the Phoenix began to score at a higher pace but Freed were beginning to find their footing as well, shooting nearly 50% from the field for the whole first half.

From just under five minutes left to play in the quarter to the 40 second mark not a single point was scored by the Lions, showing Cumberland's resiliency on that end despite a lack of points on the opposite end. A pair of FHU threes and a buzzer beating Kayla Gordon layup made the game 31-15 at the break.

Coming out of the half the Phoenix looked like a team on a mission, getting stop after stop. It took the Lions four minutes to get their first basket after the break, while CU went a perfect 3-3 from the charity stripe and dropped in two more layups to cut into the deficit.

The fourth quarter kept up the trend that the third began, as the Lions put up points in bunches and even though the Phoenix scored more than they did previously, the gap continued to grow. As the buzzer expired 30 points separated the two teams, cementing the Freed-Hardeman win, 72-42.

Kayla Gordon and Ever Walker combined for 28 of Cumberland's 42 points, aided also by Faith Colston's six rebounds.

Cumberland will be back in action at noon on Saturday taking on the no. 7 ranked Georgetown Tigers.
