LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland men's soccer put together one of their most complete performances of the season, cruising to a 4-0 win over Freed-Hardeman at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
The Phoenix were in control from the opening whistle, peppering the Lions' goal throughout the first half. Philipp Schmidtke opened the scoring in the 30th minute after a crisp build-up through Pau Ortega and Luis Cerejo. Schmidtke struck again just before halftime, this time off a feed from Miquel Gelabert to double the lead heading into the break.
Cumberland kept its foot on the gas in the second half. Cerejo added a third in the 60th minute, putting a clean side volley into the back of the net to finish off a clever combination from Gelabert and Dominik Gedek. Ortega then sealed the result with a late penalty in the 88th minute to make it 4-0.
The Phoenix defense stood tall all game, limiting Freed-Hardeman to just four shots and one on target. NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper Eric Zalaya, recorded his fourth clean sheet of the season, as Cumberland improved to 11-1-3 overall and 3-1-1 in Mid-South play.
Cumberland will return home next Monday to face Georgetown College in their penultimate conference matchup of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
