Julia Varpness went a five-point sport with a two and a ball for her first points of her college career to give CU a 15-9 lead with four minutes left in the first.

Oakwood went a four-point run with a free throw and a three, but Buckley layed in a two, Tarpley followed suit, and Maddie Brillhart drilled a three for a 23-15 lead at the end of the first.

The Phoenix exploded in the second frame, outscoring Oakwood 30-9 to stretch the lead to 53-24 at halftime. CU's defensive pressure forced multiple turnovers, fueling transition buckets and open threes.

Oakwood found a bit more rhythm after halftime, but Cumberland maintained a comfortable margin. Tarpley and Brillhart combined for key baskets to keep the Phoenix steady, as the team entered the final quarter up 74-40 after three periods.

With the game well in hand, Oakwood outscored Cumberland 30-13 down the stretch as the Phoenix turned to their bench to close out the win. Despite the late surge, Cumberland's early dominance secured the 87-70 victory and a 1-0 start to the season.
