Phoenix Deny No. 6 Campbellsville’s Two-Point Try to Win Homecoming Thriller

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland football knocked off undefeated and No. 6-ranked Campbellsville 35-33 in front of a packed Homecoming crowd Saturday afternoon at Nokes-Lasater Field. The Phoenix, featured as one of the NAIA UEN Games of the Day, erupted for 23 fourth-quarter points to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, capped by a dramatic defensive stand on a potential game-tying two-point conversion with just four seconds remaining.

Cumberland (5-3, 1-2 MSC) turned in one of its most complete performances of the year, piling up 551 total yards of offense while holding the Tigers to 407. The Phoenix moved the chains 33 times, including 14 via the run and 14 through the air, and winning time of possession battle. The offense was balanced all day, producing 262 rushing yards and 289 passing yards behind quarterback Jake Parker, who accounted for 428 total yards and three touchdowns.

Parker completed 22-of-34 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown while rushing 16 times for 139 yards and two scores. Jacob Cornejo added 65 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and Rod Payne chipped in 77 all-purpose yards. Isaac Finch led the receiving corps with 73 yards on four catches, Isaiah O'Neal caught five passes for 64 yards, and Nate Stephens added 35 yards and a touchdown. Jack Kantner was perfect on the day, connecting on all three field goal attempts and two extra points.

Defensively, Boston Follis paced the Phoenix with nine tackles, followed by Cannon Johnson with eight. Daniel Doegan picked off a pass late in the fourth quarter to set up Cumberland's final touchdown, and Tavarius Pitts recovered a key fumble in the opening quarter to help spark momentum.

Campbellsville (6-1, 2-1 MSC) tallied 407 yards of offense on 55 plays, with quarterback Jett Engle throwing for 351 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers mustered just 51 rushing yards on 19 attempts and were penalized seven times for 87 yards.

Engle completed 23-of-36 passes for 351 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Easton Barlow hauled in six passes for 133 yards and a score, while Tre' Bass added 80 yards and a touchdown on four catches. The Tiger defense was led by Chase Maynard, who finished with 10 tackles.

Cumberland struck first midway through the first quarter as the Phoenix forced a fumble on Campbellsville's opening drive that Pitts' recovered. Kantner capped a 40-yard drive with a 20-yard field goal. Both defenses stood tall early, and the Phoenix carried a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.

In the second, Campbellsville capitalized off a turnover and drove the length of the field to finish it off with a short touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead. Cumberland responded with Kantner's second field goal of the day, this time from 21 yards out, cut the deficit to one, but the Tigers added a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the half to take a 10-6 advantage into the break.

The Tigers extended their lead in the third quarter when they blocked a Cumberland punt and recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown just 27 seconds into the half. The Phoenix answered with a 10-play, 77-yard drive capped by Cornejo's one-yard touchdown run to make it 17-12, but Campbellsville struck back on the very next play with a 72-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 24-12. A Tiger field goal late in the quarter stretched it to 27-12 heading into the final frame.

Cumberland's comeback began early in the fourth quarter. Parker engineered an 11-play, 90-yard drive, finding Stephens in the end zone from 19 yards out to cut the lead to 27-19. After the defense forced a three-and-out, Parker again led the Phoenix down the field. He capped a 79-yard march with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Phoenix back within two. Cumberland tried to tie it with a two-point conversion, but the try was intercepted.

The defense once again rose to the occasion and forced another three-and-out. Cumberland took over at their own 20 and started the drive off with a big 40 yard pass to Rod Payne. The drive however halted, but Kantner drilled his third field goal of the day, a 30-yarder, with 3:38 remaining to give CU its first lead since the opening quarter at 28-27.

Moments later, Doegan's interception gave Cumberland the ball back, and Parker put the exclamation point on the rally with a 70-yard touchdown run down the left sideline to extend the lead to 35-27.

Campbellsville drove 77 yards in the final minute and scored with four seconds remaining to make it 35-33 and make things interesting. Campbellsville tried an end around, but the Phoenix defense came up with the play of the game, denying the Tigers' two-point attempt to preserve the victory.

The Phoenix return to action next Saturday as they host the University of the Cumberlands in another Mid-South Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
