Gelabert’s Brace Lifts Cumberland Past Campbellsville, Into MSC Semifinals

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland men's soccer advanced to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals with a decisive 2-0 shutout victory over fifth-seeded Campbellsville on Friday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. The Phoenix struck twice in the first half behind a brace from Miquel Gelabert to secure the win and advance to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals.

Cumberland controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Tigers 26–4, including a 9–2 edge in shots on goal. The Phoenix also earned a 5–0 advantage in corner kicks and limited Campbellsville to just four total attempts. CU committed nine fouls and was shown four yellow cards, while holding the Tigers scoreless for the full 90 minutes.

Gelabert paced the Phoenix attack with both goals, scoring in the 6th and 34th minutes. Luis Cerejo assisted both goals and Philipp Schmidtke recorded an assist on the second tally. Schmidtke was active throughout, generating six shots on frame, while Harold Perea and Pau Ortega added three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Eric Zalaya picked up the shutout, making two saves in 90 minutes of action to notch his fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Tigers struggled to find rhythm offensively, managing only four total shots—two of which were on goal. Campbellsville was whistled for eight fouls and received two yellow cards while failing to earn a single corner kick opportunity.

Goalkeeper Malthe Schou was kept busy throughout, registering seven saves while facing 26 Phoenix attempts. Filip Saric and Juan Zapata each recorded one shot on goal, while Fredrik Nordal and Ollie Jagroop tallied the other two attempts for the Tigers.

Cumberland wasted no time setting the tone, breaking through just five minutes in when Miquel Gelabert buried a chance for the early 1–0 lead. The Phoenix continued to press, peppering the Campbellsville defense with consistent pressure and multiple looks on frame. Gelabert struck again in the 34th minute, this time off a combination from Cerejo and Schmidtke to double the advantage. The Phoenix closed the half with 17 shots compared to the Tigers' one, taking a 2–0 lead into the break.

Cumberland continued to dictate possession after halftime, maintaining the tempo and outshooting Campbellsville 9–3 over the final 45 minutes. Zalaya came up with two key saves to preserve the clean sheet, while the Phoenix defense held firm and never allowed a serious threat. Despite several late attempts from Campbellsville, Cumberland's back line stood strong to close out the 2–0 win.

With the victory, Cumberland (12-2-3) advances to face top-seeded Cumberlands (8-4-4) in the MSC Semifinals on Wednesday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. CT on the campus of the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.
