Cumberland Battles but Falls to Unbeaten Cumberlands

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland volleyball battled hard early, but the University of the Cumberlands pulled away late to hand the Phoenix a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-13) loss Saturday morning inside Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

With the win, the Patriots move to 18-0 overall and take sole possession of first place in the Mid-South Conference at 4-0. Cumberland falls to 19-8 on the year and 3-1 in MSC play, sitting in a tie for second in the standings with both Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville.
.
As a team, the Phoenix posted 29 kills with a .109 attack percentage, totaling 28 assists, 47 digs, and four team blocks. Cumberland added three service aces but committed seven errors from the line.

Lila Cade led the Phoenix offense with 13 kills, hitting .290 to go along with 10 digs. Sydney Andrews followed with seven kills, while Carlee Rogers contributed 11 assists, 10 digs, and three block assists. Emma Carter dished out 13 assists, and Kaleigh Glass anchored the defense with a team-high 13 digs.

The Patriots finished the match with 41 kills and a .308 hitting percentage while adding nine service aces, 55 digs, and four team blocks.

Individually, Sara Zampedri paced Cumberlands with 17 kills and a .441 attack percentage, while Kara Gipson added nine kills on a blistering .750 clip. Savanah Jolly tallied 27 assists, 15 digs, and three aces to lead the offense, and Davey Slaughter also finished with 15 digs.

In the opening set, both teams traded points early before Cumberlands used a late 6-0 run to close it out, 25-19. Cade had four kills in the frame to keep CU close, but the Patriots hit .303 to take control late.

Set two mirrored the first, as the Phoenix came out strong and led 5-2 early, but the Patriots' front line turned the tide midway through the set. Cumberlands hit .271 and used timely blocking to take another 25-19 win and a 2-0 match lead.

The Patriots came out firing in the third, jumping ahead 8-0 to start the set and never allowing Cumberland to recover. Zampedri recorded six kills in the frame as Cumberlands hit a match-best .391 to close the sweep, 25-13.

Cumberland returns to action next week with a road trip to No. 25 Lindsey Wilson as conference play continues and then a tri-match at Campbellsville on Saturday with a match against the Tigers and Talladega.
