Men's Soccer Heads to Bethel to Continue Conference Play and Continue Their Hot Streak

LEBANON, Tenn. - - No. 14 Cumberland Men's Soccer looks to continue their winning ways as they head to McKenzie, Tennessee to play the No. 24 ranked Bethel University Wildcats.

The Phoenix (9-1-2) (1-1) just had the best win for their program in three seasons after they went on the road and upset the No. 2 team in the country, Lindsey Wilson. This will be Cumberland's fifth game against a top 25 opponent, where they are 2-1-1.

The offensive firepower the Phoenix have been known for this season hasn't gone away, as CU leads the conference in almost every major statistical category. Forward Philipp Schmidtke's 31 points leads everyone in the conference and is sixth in the NAIA. Just behind him, Luis Cerejo (26) and Miquel Gelebert (25) currently sit at second and third respectively in the Mid-South. Cerejo's 12 assists is also leading the conference and second in the country.

After a strong performance at Lindsey Wilson that earned him Mid-South Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper Eric Zalaya is looking to build on that momentum into this matchup. The Spaniards 32 saves is third in the conference, and he is tied for the conference lead in wins with eight.

The Wildcats (7-0-1) (2-0) are currently on a six game winning streak and are coming off an upset victory on the road as well, as they beat No. 15 Georgia Gwinnett 4-2. This match will be Bethel's second ranked matchup.

The Wildcats are led by midfielder Souleymane Balde, who has eight goals and three assists, six of which contributions have come in MSC action. Balde's four goals leads the conference and his two assists put him in second place, only behind fellow Wildcat forward Gregory Cousins who has three assists in conference play. Balde and Cousins both have won one Mid-South Offensive Player of the Week award.

Defensively, the Wildcats have been solid, placing second in the conference in goals allowed average (.75) including three shutouts. They have only allowed one goal in conference play. Goalkeeper Diego Camargo has allowed just five goals in eight games, making 18 saves in that time.

Bethel has the lead in the all-time series history, but the Phoenix have won the last three matchups, something they will look to continue when they travel to McKenzie on Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM and you can tune in to watch on the Bethel Sports Network.
