Women’s Soccer Look to Remain Unbeaten in the Conference as They Face Bethel on the Road

Lebanon, Tenn. - - Women's soccer face Bethel on the road on Friday night as they look to remain unbeaten in the Mid-South Conference.

In all time history the Phoenix have edged the Wildcats 9-7-2 with the most recent match up ending in a 2-0 Cumberland win. CU has not lost a game to Bethel since 2011, although in 2023 the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Phoenix suffered a 3-1 loss in their most recent game against Life University. Cumberland started the game well getting shots off early, however, it was Life who broke the deadlock just five minutes in. The eagles scored again, making it 2-0 at the half and leaving the Phoenix with a hill to climb to get back into the game. The rain came down hard in the second half and forced play to be paused. After the break, Life continued their momentum as a strike from Phoenix Park back hit the roof of the net, putting the Eagles in a comfortable position. Uxia Varela managed to pull one back with a great strike in the 77th minute, but it was too little too late as the Phoenix fell 3-1.

Cumberland will hope that they can get back to winning ways on Friday night. In previous games CU have been efficient in front of goal, outscoring their opponents 37-13. Victoria Collins and Olga Wallemo lead the way in goals with six each, the most of any player in the conference.

Senior midfielder Seika Stull has connected well with her teammates and sits first in the conference for assists with nine. The Phoenix attack has depth with 13 different players chipping in with goals this season. Cumberland are averaging 3.6 goals per game.

Celia Martin has been impressive in goal so far, with the Junior receiving two Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the week honors. Martin has made 43 saves this season
Including four against Lindsey Wilson to ensure the Phoenix remained unbeaten in conference play.

Niamh Warrender has been solid in the back for Cumberland. The senior has started every game this season and has two assists. She is partnered with Ellie Winter who has also started every game, building a strong defense that has the second best goals against average in the conference.

Bethel comes into the game 2-7-1 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Briley Ross leads the team in goals with three, however, Bethel have struggled to find consistent success in front of goal, scoring an average of 0.9 goals per game. In defense, the Wildcats have used both goalkeepers, Estelle Olive and Alba Lopez Guerrero, making 14 and 19 saves respectively.

The game kicks off at 5pm in McKenzie, Tn. Watch live on the Cumberland Sports Network.
