Phoenix Conference Tournament run comes to an end in Semifinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-- Cumberland women's volleyball saw its run at the Mid-South Conference Tournament come to an end Friday afternoon, falling to top-seeded and undefeated Cumberlands (Ky.) 18-25, 21-25, 11-25 in the semifinals at Bowling Green Arena. The loss moves the Phoenix to 25-15 overall, while the Patriots improve to 34-0.

The Phoenix finished with 30 kills and a .173 hitting percentage, adding 53 digs and 3.0 total blocks as a team. Andrews led the way with seven kills, while Rogers, Cade, Konkel and Hubbell each tallied five kills apiece. Rogers added a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs, Cade posted a team-high 13 digs, and libero Morgan Snead recorded nine digs and 41 receptions. Emma Carter handed out 11 assists and chipped in six digs.

Cumberlands countered with 48 kills on a .305 clip, 68 digs and 6.0 total blocks. Brynnley Bryant led all players with 15 kills, while Sara Zampedri added 13 kills and 17 digs. Setter Savanah Jolly paced the Patriots' attack with 39 assists and 11 digs. Davey Slaughter added in 14 digs on the back row. 

Cumberland hung around early in the opening frame, trading points and pulling within 12-11. Cumberlands responded with a surge behind its offense on the pins, nearly trading 2-for-1 points the rest of the set to get the first. Sydney Andrews and Rogers added late kills to keep the set alive, but the Patriots closed it out 25-18 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was the most competitive of the afternoon as the Phoenix matched the Patriots point for point through the middle stages. Kills from Hazel Konkel and Hailey Jones, along with swings from Cade and Andrews, kept Cumberland within striking distance at 13-11. Cumberlands again found separation late, but another run by the Phoenix forced UC into a timeout up by hust one at 21-20. The Patriots finished the frame 25-21 to go up 2-0.

Cumberlands controlled the third from the start. The two sides were tied at 6-6 before 5-1 spurt gave the Patriots some cushion before taking full control. The Patriots would go on to win the set 25-11 punching their ticket to the conference championship match. 

Cumberland now awaits word on its postseason fate as national championship selections are announced in the coming days.
