Phoenix Break Scoring Record on Senior Day in 72–14 Win

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland closed the regular season in record-breaking fashion on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Faulkner, 72-14, at Nokes-Lasater Field. The Phoenix shattered the program's single-game scoring mark with 72 points, eclipsing the previous record of 65 set against Campbellsville in 2022, and finished the year at 7-4 overall and 3-3 in Mid-South Conference play.

Cumberland's offense was relentless from start to finish, piling up 572 yards of total offense.  The Phoenix bullied their way to 461 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 56 attempts and complemented the ground game with a highly efficient 10-for-16, 111-yard, two-touchdown passing day.

Quarterback Jake Parker orchestrated the record-setting day with a huge game. The junior accounted for six total touchdowns, completing 10-of-16 passes for 111 yards and two scores while rushing 15 times for 103 yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, Lamar Childress led a deep backfield with 10 carries for 115 yards and a 32-yard touchdown, while quarterback Brett Cortez added a 60-yard scoring burst on his lone carry. Jacob Cornejo pounded out 68 yards and a 20-yard touchdown on 10 rushes, and Jaylen Abston chipped in 65 yards on seven keepers. And senior William Spence added a 4-yard touchdown run.

Through the air, Isaiah O'Neal and Jarrius Rogers each hauled in Parker's two touchdown passes.

Defensively, Cumberland limited Faulkner to just 128 total yards, including only 26 passing yards. The Phoenix front registered six tackles for loss and CU forced five total turnovers, including four interceptions and a fumble recovery. Cannon Johnson filled up the stat sheet with five tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception, while linebackers Chazz Hunter and Boston Follis each finished with six stops, Follis adding two tackles for loss. Daniel Smith, wide receiver Nate Stephens, Johnson, and Chase Manning all came away with interceptions, and Zae Odom pounced on a fumble as the Phoenix turned each takeaway into a touchdown drive.

Faulkner's offense found the end zone twice in the first half but was otherwise bottled up by the Cumberland defense. Robin Harris was the bright spot, carrying 17 times for 79 yards and both Faulkner touchdowns, including a long scoring run in the first quarter. Quarterback Eli Moore went 5-for-18 passing for 26 yards and three interceptions. Defensively, Kentrell Borden posted a game-high 11 tackles, while Andra'e McMillian had 10 tackles, and Caleb Williams had nine.

Cumberland set the tone immediately, marching 75 yards on nine plays on the opening possession of the game. Parker mixed in quarterback keepers with a steady dose of Cornejo and Childress before tucking it himself for an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Phoenix on top, 7-0.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Phoenix went right back to work with another methodical drive. Starting at their own 33, CU needed just eight plays to cover 67 yards, again leaning on the ground game and Parker's legs. The junior capped the drive with another 8-yard keeper for a 13-0 lead after the PAT sailed wide.

Faulkner answered with its best series of the day, using a five-play, 47-yard march to get on the board. Harris carried the load, finishing the drive by bouncing a run outside and sprinting 29 yards for a touchdown with 2:30 left in the first quarter to trim the margin to 13-7.

A late first-quarter interception gave Cumberland a short field to open the second, and the Phoenix wasted no time cashing it in. CU needed just three snaps before Parker found the end zone again, slicing through the middle for a 14-yard touchdown run early in the second.

Another quick defensive stop and interception set the Phoenix offense up inside the Eagles' 10-yard line midway through the second quarter. This time Parker went to the air, zipping an 11-yard strike to O'Neal for a 27-7 lead.

Faulkner briefly steadied itself with a five-play, 27-yard scoring march, again riding Harris in the red zone. The Eagle tailback finished the drive with a 4-yard plunge at the 4:34 mark to cut the deficit to 27-14 after the extra point.

Cumberland responded with another long, balanced drive to restore order. Cornejo finished the series with a 20-yard touchdown burst up the middle with 1:52 remaining in the half, stretching the lead to 34-14.

The Phoenix special teams created yet another short field in the final minute before the break. Kantner's kick-off was muffed and Odom pounced on it. The offense turned it into one more touchdown before halftime. Parker fired a 7-yard touchdown pass to Rogers with 29 seconds left for a 41-14 lead at the half.

The defense opened the third quarter the way it handled most of the afternoon by taking the ball away. Parker and Childress traded carries on a five-play, 30-yard march before Parker darted in from 16 yards out for his fourth rushing touchdown of the day, pushing the margin to 48-14.

Faulkner mounted a lengthy drive late in the third quarter, but the Phoenix defense bowed up on fourth down in the red zone to keep the Eagles off the board. Cumberland then strung together a nine-play, 81-yard drive that chewed up nearly six minutes, stalling just inside Faulkner territory. Jack Kantner capped the series by drilling a 26-yard field goal to extend the lead to 51-14.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Phoenix ground game delivered another statement drive. After the defense forced a punt, CU took over at its own 27 and needed just five plays to go 73 yards. Childress broke free up the middle and sprinted 32 yards to the house with 10:36 remaining, and Kantner's PAT made it 58-14.

Cumberland's fourth interception of the afternoon set up the next score, as the Phoenix again took over deep in Faulkner territory following the return. Five snaps later, William Spence took a jet sweep from 4 yards out to push the tally to 65-14.

The Phoenix put an exclamation point on the record day with one final quick strike on the ground. After another defensive stand, quarterback Brett Cortez took a handoff and burst through a seam, racing 60 yards untouched for a touchdown, cementing the new single-game scoring record as Cumberland celebrated Senior Day and closed the regular season in grand fashion.

With the win, the Phoenix finished the 2025 campaign undefeated at home, the first time they have gone undefeated at home since 2017.
