Cumberland Holds Off Late Rally for Road Win at Brescia

OWENSBORO, Ky.--Cumberland men's basketball gutted out a road win on Tuesday night, holding off a late Brescia rally to earn a 74-71 victory in Owensboro and move to 6-2 on the season. The Phoenix controlled much of the night behind their work in the paint and on the glass, then made just enough plays in the closing minutes to finish it off.

The Phoenix set the tone physically, pounding the ball inside and dominating the backboards in a 44-33 first-half effort before fending off a hard-charging Brescia side after the break.

Cumberland finished the night shooting 39.7% from the field and 21-of-29 at the foul line while owning a 53-36 advantage on the glass and a 42-36 edge in points in the paint. The bench chipped in 24 points and the Phoenix turned 19 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points, key numbers in a game that tightened late.

Triston Conger once again steered the Cumberland attack, pouring in a team-high 18 points on an efficient 8-for-13 from the floor to go with five rebounds, five assists and two steals in 38 minutes. Michael Nwoye was a force inside, posting a huge double-double with 14 points and 19 rebounds while adding a block and a steal. Nick Brunetti added eight points, including a first-half three that helped ignite the early surge, while Zaylin Rowland and Jake Hatch each finished with six points.

On the other side, Brescia refused to go away on its home floor, outscoring Cumberland 38-30 in the second half to put pressure on the Phoenix down the stretch. Four Bearcats ended the game in double figure points. Jaunte Jenkins and Israel Momodu each had 14 points, with Jenkins adding six assists and Momodu grabbing seven boards. Linkin Lockhart knocked down three triples on his way to 13 points, and Jordan Cooke chipped in 11 points and five assists as Brescia turned up the defensive pressure to generate 11 steals and claw back into the game.

After a slow start offensively from both teams Brescia worked it to a 4-2 lead at 16:00, the only time Brescia held an advantage in the game. From that point on, the Phoenix flipped the momentum with a 15-6 surge powered by their physicality inside. Michael Nwoye cleaned the glass early, grabbing multiple defensive rebounds before finishing at the rim and later converting free throws as CU fought through traffic to build separation. Nick Brunetti drilled a three during the run, and Cooper Abner added a layup after forcing a turnover, helping Cumberland stretch the score to 18-10 as the offense settled in.
Brescia responded briefly with a pair of threes from Jordan Cooke and Kabryen Tinson, but every time the Bearcats found a spark, Cumberland countered with a paint touch or a second-chance finish. Antonio Wilkerson gave CU a huge lift off the bench by grabbing four offensive rebounds in the half, all in a short sequence, leading to four free throws that pushed the Phoenix steadily ahead. Late in the half, Triston Conger took control, scoring three straight buckets, including two strong takes to the rim, that helped Cumberland finish the period on a 9-3 run and take a 44-33 lead into the locker room.

Brescia opened the second half with urgency, creating turnovers on consecutive possessions and turning them into fast-break points. Linkin Lockhart knocked down a three and later scored on a runout layup to spark a 10-2 Bearcat burst that slashed CU's lead down to single digits.
Jenkins played a major role in the push, finding teammates in transition and later converting a finish at the rim. Cumberland steadied itself through the interior once again, with Nwoye answering Brescia's run by scoring inside and knocking down a pair of free throws, while Matthew Stokes added a put-back score that pushed the Phoenix back to the largest of the game at 60-47 with 11 minutes to play.

The final eight minutes became a possession-by-possession grind as Brescia continued to force turnovers and chip away. Lockhart buried two deep threes, and Jenkins found Waller in the lane for free throws that cut the deficit to 69-67 with just over five minutes left.

Cumberland would hit the next four free throws at the line to get back up by six, 73-67. The Bearcats answered with a triple off an offensive board and had a chance to tie it at the horn, but the shot came up short for CU to get a 74-71 win on the road.

The Phoenix now have 11 days off before getting back on the floor after Thanksgiving on November 29th and 30th in Illinois.
