LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland women's basketball turned in another strong performance at home Saturday afternoon, defeating Oakland City 78–57 inside Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Phoenix controlled the game for nearly 38 minutes, using aggressive rebounding, efficient ball movement, and balanced scoring to pull away from the Mighty Oaks.
Cumberland shot 40.8% from the field on 29 of 71 attempts, while Oakland City finished at 43.8%. The Phoenix knocked down 12 three-pointers and went 8 of 11 from the free throw line. CU won the rebounding battle 40–30, including 18 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. Cumberland shared the ball well with 20 assists and committed just nine turnovers while converting 18 Oakland City giveaways into 17 points. The Phoenix bench also made a major impact, contributing 39 points, compared to just 13 from the Mighty Oaks.
A strong group effort led the Phoenix offensively. Riley Long posted a game-high 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, recording a double-double while finishing 7 of 13 from the field. Braley Bushman added 14 points and 8 boards, while Ever Walker matched her with 14 points, going 6 for 11 from the floor. Maddie Brillhart poured in 11 points, and Faith Colston provided steady play with four assists and six rebounds, while Sydney Schwallie chipped in with four assists of her own. Emaleigh Tarpley contributed across the board with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Oakland City was led by Nora Miller, who scored a game-high 24 points, including three made threes. Elise Williams added 10 points and three assists, while Daniela Trias scored 10 points with four rebounds. The Mighty Oaks finished 7 of 17 from beyond the arc 41.2% and 8 of 10 at the free-throw line 80% but struggled to generate extra possessions, tallying just four offensive rebounds and only one second-chance point.
It was a sluggish start to the first quarter for both teams with two Emaleigh Tarpley free throws being the only points on the board for either team after five minutes. Oakland responded with a three pointer. The Phoenix picked up a few more points through Riley Long and Braley Bushman to make it 9-3. The Mighty Oaks grabbed a couple points back however, Braley Bushman looked to have found her rhythm as she picked up five more points to finish the first quarter 14-7.
Cumberland grew into the game in the second quarter picking up 24 points in total. Ever Walker and Maddie Brillhart tallied 12 and 11 points respectively to push the Phoenix further ahead. Faith Colston picked up a couple of steals and the Cumberland defense only allowed 14 Oakwood points.
Cumberland continued to control the pace in the third quarter, using defensive pressure to force multiple Oakland City turnovers. Riley Long hit back to back layups, The Phoenix also knocked down a pair of timely three-pointers, helping extend the lead and carry momentum into the final period.
Going into the final quarter Cumberland maintained control throughout the final quarter, with Long continuing to score inside and Bushman adding key baskets. Strong rebounding and late free throws helped the Phoenix close out the game and secure the win.
The Phoenix will travel to University of Tennessee Southern on November 11 at 6pm.
