Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Goal Clips Phoenix in National Tournament Loss

ORANGE BEACH, Ala.--Cumberland men's soccer saw its season come to a heartbreaking close on Monday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Georgia Gwinnett at the NAIA National Championship final site in Orange Beach.

The Phoenix struck first and carried the lead deep into the opening half, but the Grizzlies answered just before the break and later found the winner in the 82nd minute. Georgia Gwinnett moves on to face Grand View in Thursday's Quarterfinals, while Cumberland closes the year at 14-4-3.

Cumberland landed the opening punch in the 33rd minute as Miquel Gelabert finished a composed effort to put the Phoenix on top 1-0. The goal capped a strong stretch of attacking momentum from CU, who had begun to tilt the field after an early midfield battle. Prior to the breakthrough, Luis Cerejo created the first dangerous look of the match in the 18th minute with a shot outside of the box that was blocked. The only two shots of the half by the Phoenix.

Despite Cumberland controlling much of the half, Georgia Gwinnett punched back at the critical moment. The Grizzlies equalized just before halftime, as Gabriel Martins delivered in the 44th minute to send both teams into the break level at 1-1.

The second half opened with both sides trading possession, but Cumberland generated the better early chances. Philipp Schmidtke had the first chance for CU in the second half and missed the mark wide. Ortega followed with a clean strike from 25 yards moments later, rising just over the crossbar. As the half progressed, the Phoenix pushed higher and higher, building repeated spells of pressure, including a sequence of three straight corners in the 73rd minute that was stifled each time by the Grizzlies defense.

But in a match played on a razor's edge, Georgia Gwinnett capitalized on one of their few late opportunities. Josefa Simao scored the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute, finishing off a cross from Michael Mallaburn on a set piece to give the Grizzlies the 2-1 advantage.

Cumberland still put together a strong statistical effort, outshooting Georgia Gwinnett 10-7 and earning a decisive 4-1 edge in corners. Gelabert led the CU attack with a goal on two shots, while Cerejo, Ortega, and Schmidtke each found moments to test the Grizzlies' back line throughout the afternoon.

Defensively, the unit of Donaldson, Alejandro Vega, Kacper Wolicki, Jostin Angel, and company battled throughout, holding Georgia Gwinnett to just seven total attempts and four on target.

In goal, Eric Zalaya recorded two saves while backstopping a Phoenix side that refused to bend defensively until the late deciding moment.

Cumberland wraps up the season with 14 wins, the first postseason national tournament victory in program history, and a trip to the NAIA National Championship site.
