Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Buckley's Big Day Pushes Phoenix Past Running Eagles in Marietta

MARIETTA, Ga. - - The Cumberland women's basketball came back from a nearly two week hiatus and returned with a bang, taking down Life University on the road, 66-56.

Cumberland shot 43.4 percent from the field (23-of-53) and limited Life to 37.1 percent shooting, holding the Eagles to just 17.6 percent in the fourth quarter to secure the 66–56 victory. The Phoenix also finished an efficient 78.9 percent at the free throw line (15-of-19), converting key attempts late to maintain separation.

Ty Buckley led all scorers with a game-high 25 points while playing all 40 minutes, adding four steals and knocking down three three-pointers. Emaleigh Tarpley recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, controlling the glass and providing consistent interior presence throughout the contest.

Cumberland won the rebounding battle 37–31 and scored 36 points in the paint compared to Life's 28, highlighting a physical advantage inside. The Phoenix also forced 22 turnovers and converted those into 10 points, while limiting Life's transition opportunities.

Things opened up quickly for the Running Eagles who used their home court advantage well to open up an 18-12 lead after one quarter, but Ty Buckley and Emaleigh Tarpley began to shine in the second quarter and pull the Phoenix back into the game. Buckley opened the frame up with a pair of free throws and back-to-back triples, before Tarpley wrapped up the second with eight points in the final three minutes.

Despite the offensive uptick Cumberland still trailed at the break, though they outscored the Running Eagles by five in the quarter and cut it to a single point deficit. Using that late run and momentum, Cumberland continued to pour it on in the third quarter and held the lead for their longest portion of the game, prior to the fourth quarter.

Buckley rained in a three to tie it straight away and after a short back and forth a Julia Varpness layup at the three minute mark was the final time the Phoenix would have to flip a lead change. Ever Walker and Faith Colston also began to chip in during the frame, setting CU up for an even better final frame.

Braley Bushman scored her first points of the game with a contested layup and five straight points from Walker saw the Phoenix extend their lead out to double digits for the first time all evening, leading 62-50. After the final 20 minutes of action, the Phoenix had pulled out a 37-26 gap in the second half and won by a final score of 66-56.

The Phoenix will be back at home for their final two home games in December, first taking on Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 5:30 PM next Tuesday, December 16th.
