Cumberland Baseball Splits the Season Opener at Woody Hunt Stadium

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball looked great in game one picking up a nine-run win in game one, but suffered a big loss in the game to split the doubleheader.

The Phoenix started off great in the first game racking up 14 hits and scoring 11 runs. Cumberland bopped four home runs in the game. Riley Light went 3-for-4 in the game with a homer and three RBIs. Toshiki Kuriya went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs driven in. Wilser Then collected three hits and Dylan LaRue and Preston Welchel each bopped a homer. 

Marcelo Saldana tossed four innings of three hit baseball in the win. He struck out one batter and one walk giving up one unearned run. Grayson Cole threw two scoreless innings in relief and Will Graves tossed the final frame giving up two runs. 

The Cougars struck first in game one scoring in the top of the third. Brayden Coffey reached on a throwing error. He advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a ground out to the shortstop. 

Cumberland got it going in the bottom half of the inning. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi got on base with a bunt single and came around to score on a Then single up the middle. Welchel followed with a home run to right field to put CU up 3-1. Light single through the left side to keep the inning alive and Kuriya hit a bomb to left field to push the lead out. Trent Duchsherer reached on a walk and courtesy runner Ty Martin stole second before scoring on a Corbin Sanchez double for a six-run inning. 

In the fourth, LaRue got on base via a hit by pitch and Then followed with a single. After a wild pitch pushed both runners up, Welchel hit a sac fly to score LaRue. Light roped a double to center to give CU a 8-1 lead. 

The Phoenix tacked on three more runs in the sixth. LaRue led off the inning with a home run down the left field line and Light hit a two-run moon-shot to left for an 11-1 run.  Kokomo tacked on two in the seventh off a two-run home run from Payton Hankins for the 11-3 final score. 

The second game was all IU-Kokomo as the Cougars beat the Phoenix 18-5. 

Kokomo scored in the first off a sac fly before the Cougars scored four in the third for a 5-0. Cumberland got a run back in the bottom half as Sanchez singled home Rafael Garcia to chip away at the lead, but IU Kokomo scored five more in the fourth and another five runs in the fifth for a 15-1 lead. 

The Cougars pushed across three more runs in the sixth. The Phoenix scored three in the final frame to make the final score 18-3. 

Cumberland used six pitchers in the game. The pitchers walked 13 batters and hit another four. JP Kenyon suffered the loss after throwing 2.2 innings giving five runs in the start. 

Sanchez and Javier Beal each collected two hits in the game with an RBI each. Welchel had one hit with two runs batters in. 

The Phoenix and Cougars will play two more games tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m. central time.
