Women's Basketball Push Freed to the Wire in Close Loss

HENDERSON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball Team hit the road for the first time in three games to take on the no. 7 ranked Freed-Hardeman Lions.

Playing strong defense throughout the first quarter, the Phoenix held onto a tight game for much of the opening ten minutes, though one player was doing it all for Freed. Rachel Satterly came out and hit three long range shots to nearly score as many points as Cumberland did in the whole quarter, but Emaleigh Tarpley did her best heroics by scoring seven points in the quarter along with a pair of rebounds.

The Phoenix took a five point deficit into the following quarter and it played out much the same as the first. FHU were able to score at a better rate than the Phoenix but Cumberland kept up the pressure with a three-pointer from three different players: Maddie Brillhart, Kayla Gordon, and Ever Walker.

After such a lopsided scoring effort from the Lions in the first, they adjusted and had seven different players score at least two points but no more than four points. The Lions did maintain their lead going into the break however, with 11 points separating each team, 33-22.

Both teams came out cold after the break, scoring just nine points each on a combined 25% from the field in the quarter. Tarpley continued her effort on the night with another three pointer, as well as another long range effort to start the fourth quarter.

With Tarpley's shot, the Phoenix brought that 11 gap from the break all the way back down to just a two possession game at 43-37. Responding quickly, Freed got it into the post to their five who was able to make a contested layup, widening the gap back out.

Again clawing their way back into the game, the Phoenix were aided by a Maddie Brillhart three, though the Lions matched with a deep range fire of their own in the very next possession. With just over three minutes left to play, Jordan Harris made a layup which would be the final points scored by either team until Tarpley sank two free throws to make it a 49-44 game.

When the final buzzer sounded the Phoenix had allowed just 18 points in the second half, but it was not enough to pull off the upset in Henderson. Emaleigh Tarpley was just a point shy of leading all scorers as she chipped in 15 points, while both Maddie Brillhart and Jordan Harris put in an efficient nine points each.

Cumberland will now head to Williamsburg, Kentucky to take on the Cumberlands for their return trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 PM Saturday, February 15th.
