Offensive Explosion Propels Phoenix Past Pioneers in Doubleheader Sweep

SPARTANBURG, S.C.--Cumberland's bats were alive in a doubleheader sweep as the Phoenix combined to score 27 runs in two wins over Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday.

Cumberland opened the day by pulling off a thrilling 13-12 comeback victory over Spartanburg Methodist in a back-and-forth battle. The Phoenix used a ninth-inning solo homer from Trenton Duchscherer to seal the win after a game filled with momentum swings.

Duchscherer had a standout game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs, delivering clutch hits in the third, seventh, and ninth innings. Welchel also played a key role, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a pivotal two-run single in the seventh and a solo home run in the sixth. Dalton-Akiwumi sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, collecting three hits, scoring twice, and driving in two runs. Rafael Garcia contributed with three hits of his own, adding two RBIs and scoring twice.

On the mound, Kyle Nyblod earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out three. Justin Goldstein started on the hill for CU, pitching three innings and allowing five runs, though only two were earned. Jake Green followed with three innings of relief, surrendering three runs on two hits while striking out two.

Cumberland jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the second inning on a two-run double from Drew Dalton-Akiwumi. After Spartanburg Methodist responded with a two-run homer, CU regained the lead in the third with a two-run single from Duchscherer. However, the Pioneers answered right back, capitalizing on an error and another home run to take a 5-4 lead.

The Phoenix chipped away with a run in the fifth before Preston Welchel launched a solo shot in the sixth to give CU a 6-5 advantage. But once again, Spartanburg Methodist had an answer, belting a three-run homer to reclaim the lead at 8-6.

Cumberland erupted for a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Welchel and a two-run triple from Duchscherer to surge ahead 11-8. Spartanburg Methodist refused to go away, as Peyton Winfield belted his third home run of the game, a three-run blast, to tie things up before an RBI single put the Pioneers back on top 12-11.

In the eighth, Hunter Moser's sacrifice fly knotted the game once again, setting the stage for Duchscherer's game-winning solo homer in the ninth.

Cumberland baseball kept its momentum rolling, securing a convincing 14-6 win over Spartanburg Methodist in Game two to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Phoenix used a massive fourth inning and another strong offensive showing to pull away early and never look back.

Spartanburg Methodist got on the board first with a solo homer from Jarian Pinckney in the opening frame and added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. However, Cumberland responded in the third when Rafael Garcia drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit in half.

The Phoenix took control in the fourth inning, exploding for six runs. Wilser Then put Cumberland in front with a two-run single, followed by a two-run single from Toshiki Kuriya. A sacrifice fly from Duchscherer and a wild pitch that allowed another run to score extended the lead to 7-2. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi capped off the inning with an RBI groundout to push the advantage to 8-2.

Cumberland tacked on three more in the fifth, capitalizing on a hit-by-pitch, a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 11-2. Spartanburg Methodist added a solo homer in the sixth, but the Phoenix answered in the seventh when Welchel delivered a bases-clearing double, driving in three runs to make it 14-3. The Pioneers put together a rally in the bottom half, scoring three runs to give us the 14-6 final score.

Welchel had another standout performance, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three walks, while Dalton-Akiwumi drove in two runs. Then also added two RBIs, finishing 2-for-4, and Kuriya provided a key two-run single. Garcia and Duchscherer each chipped in an RBI.

On the mound, Quinlan Wiley (2-0) was sharp on the mound for the Phoenix, striking out eight over five innings while allowing just two runs on five hits. Lincoln Juarez followed with a strong inning of relief, striking out three and allowing one run. Will Graves and Ryan Calvert combined to finish the game, with Calvert recording the final two outs.

The Phoenix and Pioneers will finish off the series tomorrow with a single game at noon central time.
