Men's Volleyball Defeats Rio Grande in the Home Opener!

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Men's Volleyball takes the victory in the home opener against Rio Grande

Set one started back and forth in which was highlighted by Joao Infante who had four kills early in the first set. The Phoenix pulled to the largest lead of the night at 21-18 but the Red Storm rallied on a 6-0 run to take the lead away from the Phoenix. Kaden Kuehler had a huge kill to change the momentum within the final points of the first set alongside a monstrous kill by Infante to tie it at 23-23. Chance Gallardo took the Phoenix to victory with back to back service aces to win set one 25-23. 

After a very intense set one, the Red Storm opened the second set with a service error and the Phoenix capitalized off of it with an immediate kill by Jacob Whyte. Another huge block by Infante tied it back up at 5-5. The rest of set two was back and forth with no significant runs until the Red Storm went on a 4-0 run to take the lead over CU at 20-17. A service ace by Sam Mannebach and a couple of service errors by the Red Storm gave the Phoenix the tie at 20-20. A huge block by Whyte gave the Phoenix the lead 22-21. After a few errors and some kills by Rio Grande the Red Storm led 24-23. The Phoenix answered back with another kill from Whyte to tie it at 24-24. After multiple back and forth ties, the Phoenix and the Red Storm ended with Rio taking set two 27-25. 

Set three was very similar to the first sets with back and forth battles and no serious runs. Whyte and Kuehler both imposed pressure on the Red Storm with multiple kills in set three. Francesco Corradini came up with a massive block to give the Phoenix a 14-12 lead. The Phoenix gained their biggest lead of set three after a service error by the Red Storm and led 16-13. Kuehler with yet another monstrous kill to take the lead 19-15 in their biggest lead of the night. A huge block by Chance Gallardo sealed the deal for set three and the Phoenix took the set 25-20. 

The Phoenix jumped into a hot start in the fourth set with a 5-0 run to start strong. The Phoenix went on a 4-0 running that forced a timeout by Rio. Prior to the timeout, Gallardo set the ton with a big-time kill. Cumberland continued to impress in set four with a 4-0 run and a 19-10 lead which was led by a Mannebach kill. A service ace by Corradini extended the lead for the Phoenix 22-12. The Red Storm went on a 4-0 run but Jacob Whyte stopped the run with a huge kill to put us two points away from victory in set four. A kill from Joao Infante sealed the deal and the Phoenix won the match 3-1. 

Jacob Whyte led the way for the Phoenix with 15 kills and five blocks. Joao Infante also had a great game with 12 kills and five blocks. 

The Phoenix are back in action Saturday, March, 1st at 1:00 PM against Indiana University East.
