Cumberland Falls Short in Slugfest with No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball put up a strong offensive effort but came up short in a slugfest, falling 16-13 to Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Phoenix (19-5-1) had plenty of offense in the game scoring 13 runs on 16 hits. Gaines Haussin went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Wilser Then collected two hits with a home run and a double while Preston Welchel went 3-for-6 with a home run. Dylan LaRue and Rafael Garcia each drove in two runs.

The second-ranked Bulldogs offense out slugged the Phoenix as they rapped off 20 hits and 16 runs. Christian Shaw had a game, going 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, two home runs and a double.

Cumberland struck first, plating three runs in the opening inning. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi got things started with a walk and came around to score on a Dylan LaRue RBI single. Rafael Garcia later added a two-run single to push Cumberland ahead 3-0.

Tennessee Wesleyan  responded quickly, putting up three runs in the second before erupting for five more in the third, highlighted by a grand slam from Shaw to take an 8-3 lead.

Cumberland answered back in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer from Haussin to right field, his first career home run, to trim the deficit to 8-6.

The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fifth, but the Phoenix kept pace with a clutch two-out RBI double from Dalton-Akiwumi, making it a 9-7 game.

After Tennessee Wesleyan pushed its lead to 12-7 in the sixth on a three-run home run by Josh Shelly, Cumberland battled back again with a two-run homer from Wilser Then, a bomb to left-center, and an RBI double from Haussin, cutting the margin to 12-10.
Shaw struck again in the seventh with his second home run of the game to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 13-10, but Cumberland refused to go away, as LaRue tripled home a run in the bottom half.

Tennessee Wesleyan added single runs in the eighth and the Phoenix responded as Trenton Duchsherer hit a little league home run, a triple and an error, to get the run right back.

In the ninth, Daniel Stewart hit a two-run homer push the lead back to 16-12. Cumberland's final push came in the ninth when Preston Welchel launched a solo homer, but the rally fell short.

JP Kenyon (1-2) took the loss for Cumberland, surrendering eight runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings. Christian Delashmit (3-0) earned the win for Tennessee Wesleyan, and Daniel Davila picked up his seventh save.

Cumberland will start their conference season this Thursday and Friday in Columbia, Kentucky with a three-game series with the Blue Raiders.
