Softball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader at UT Southern


PULASKI, Tenn. – Softball Drops Both Games against UT Southern After a Tough Game Two Loss.

The Phoenix and the Firehawks used the first three innings as defensive stand-offs holding each other to no runs and stranding many runners on base for both teams.
The scoring opened in the top of the third when Cumberland's Karley Daughrity singled to center field and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a strikeout, Ashley Evans reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Daughrity to round third and score, putting Cumberland up 1-0. However, Tennessee Southern responded swiftly in the bottom of the frame. A pair of singles, a hit-by-pitch, and a bases-loaded walk brought in a run to tie the game. The Firehawks then delivered an RBI single, followed by another bases-loaded walk, giving Tennessee Southern a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Tennessee Southern capitalized on Cumberland's defensive struggles. After two quick singles, an error allowed another run to score. With two outs, a stolen base and an error by the catcher allowed another runner to cross the plate. Tennessee Southern then came up big again with an RBI double, and Cook capped off the inning with a single that plated another unearned run, extending the Firehawks' lead to 7-1.

Tennessee Southern continued to apply pressure in the bottom of the fifth. After reaching base on consecutive errors, the Firehawks added two more runs with two RBI singles sealing the 9-1 victory.

Cumberland struggled to generate offense after their lone run in the third, tallying only one hit in the final three innings.

The Phoenix struck first in the opening inning when Karsyn France's fielder's choice allowed Evans to cross home plate, giving Cumberland an early 1-0 lead. They continued to build momentum in the third, capitalizing on a Tennessee Southern fielding error that allowed Hailey Donato to score. Moments later, France delivered an RBI double, extending Cumberland's lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, Donato doubled down the left-field line, bringing in Addison Melton to make it 4-0. However, Tennessee Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning as McDaniel delivered a crucial two-run single, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The Firehawks kept chipping away in the sixth inning, with Pettie driving in another run on a single up the middle to make it 4-3. The tension continued to build as the game reached the seventh inning, where Tennessee Southern completed their comeback. With two outs and runners in scoring position, E. Singletar came through in the clutch, delivering a two-run single up the middle to walk it off and seal the win at 5-4. 

Cumberland was unable to mount a response in the final frame, as Tennessee Southern held on for the come-from-behind win. A game that started in Cumberland's favor ended in a walk-off as the Firehawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. 

The Phoenix will be back in action Friday, March 14th in Lebanon, Tenn. against Bethel University at 1:00 PM.
