Men's Volleyball Split First Day of Action in Phoenix Open

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Volleyball played a doubleheader of games this afternoon, first taking on the Campbellsville Tigers in conference play before then squaring off with Lawrence Tech in the night cap.

First up the Phoenix took on conference foes Campbellsville in the first game of their midweek doubleheader.

Set one was all Phoenix as Cumberland ran themselves out to an early lead and never looked back. Joao Infante led all players with six kills in the set, while Kaden Kuehler and Chance Gallardo both added in four kills of their own. Cumberland hit a massive 61% of their attacks, pulling away 25-18 in the first set.

Keeping up their strong hitting, Cumberland pulled out to a 6-3 lead in the second set but the Tigers were ready to respond. Taking advantage of several Phoenix service errors, Campbellsville found themselves in the lead at 10-9, though it was short lived as Cumberland found their footing to go back ahead, 16-12.

Cumberland rode that momentum out to a 23-19 lead but the Tigers were ready to claw their way back, forcing a timeout after a three point run brought it back to just a one point deficit. Campbellsville used that timeout to tie things up, though Cumberland ran away with it, 28-26.

The third set was just like the first, except in reverse order, as the Tigers pulled ahead early and stifled any Phoenix comeback hopes, winning 25-14.

With just one set needed for a victory, the Phoenix looked full of energy despite their set loss. Things were all squared up at 9-9 but Cumberland found a different gear, rallying all the way out to a 21-14 lead. That lead quickly turned into 25-17 and the Phoenix found their fifth win in conference, taking the first match of the day from the Tigers.

Joao Infante led the way for the Phoenix with 16 kills while Chance Gallardo also had a big game, picking up 10 kills with a great attacking percentage.

The first set of the match against the Blue Devils started off on the wrong foot for the homeside as Cumberland went down early and were forced to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Phoenix responded as well as they could have, hitting a crosscourt kill courtesy of Joao Infante before then blocking their next attack to stretch their lead back out to three.

The Blue Devils would not go away easily though, winning five out of the next seven points to level things up at 16-16. Cumberland took the set however, as a timely five point run pulled CU out ahead of Tech, 24-18, and the Phoenix put them away just two points later.

Taking a set lead against one of the nations top teams was never going to be easy and so naturally LTU fought their way into the match. Both sides swapped the lead up to the score being 15-15, where the Blue Devils went on a run.
Winning six of the next seven points, Tech ran their way into their largest lead of the match, helping them take the second set by a score of 25-20.

Lawrence Tech came out of the break swinging as the Blue Devils forced a timeout in quick fashion. The scoring began to balloon, getting out to 10-4, seeing the Blue Devils build more and more momentum as the set crept on.

A three point run at the end of the set gave the Blue Devils their second, while also seeing them gain their largest lead of the night, 25-15.

The fourth and final set of the match went the way of the Blue Raiders, taking the match, 25-20.

Joao Infante again led the way for the Phoenix in the match despite the loss, claiming 19 kills to combine with Jacob Whyte for an even 30.

Cumberland won't play on day two of the Phoenix Open, but will play another doubleheader on Friday against Judson and Life.
