Bats Power CU Softball to Doubleheader Sweep

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland softball dominated Haskell Indian Nations University in a 13-0 run-rule victory Thursday afternoon at Billy Dee Ross Stadium.

The Phoenix erupted for 15 hits in game one while holding the Fighting Indians to just six in the five-inning contest. Madison Croxford (3-3) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out four over five innings.

Cumberland wasted no time taking control, plating two runs in the first inning after an outfield error allowed Abby Chappell and Ashley Evans to score. 

The Phoenix broke the game open in the second, starting with a solo home run from Brylee Bartley. Hailey Donato added a sacrifice fly before Jacey Hatfield launched a three-run homer to push the lead to 7-0. Sara Brogdon capped the six-run frame with an RBI single.

The offensive onslaught continued in the third when Donato roped a two-run double down the left-field line, followed by a Karsyn France RBI single to make it 11-0. Evans tacked on a two-run double in the fourth to seal the dominant win.

Evans finished the game with a 3-for-3 performance, driving in two runs and scoring three times. Hatfield went 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in. Bartley finished 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Donato went 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Karley Daughrity, Anna Lay, and Abby Chappell each added two hits. 

Madison Lancaster (3-2) was nearly unhittable in the circle, tossing a five-inning shutout in game two while allowing just one hit and striking out four. She worked efficiently, needing only 58 pitches to throw the complete game.

Brylee Bartley provided the early spark for the Phoenix, blasting a two-run homer in the second inning to put Cumberland on the board, her second homer of the day. The offense continued rolling in the third as Chappell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and France followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0.

The Phoenix kept the pressure on in the fourth when Anna Lay plated a run with an infield single before Chappell added a two-run double to extend the advantage to 7-0. Bartley capped off her big game with an RBI single in the fifth to bring home Addison Melton, sealing the run-rule win.

Bartley finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Chappell drove in two runs. Brogdon went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Lay stole two bases while scoring a run.

Cumberland will be at home on Saturday to take on Augustana in a two-game set.
