Then Belts Three Home Runs on the Day as CU Rally's in Game Two to Win the Series over Bethel

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball battled through a tough doubleheader against Bethel University on Saturday, dropping the first game in a tight 7-6 contest before bouncing back with an 8-6 victory in game two at Woody Hunt Stadium to win the series.

In game one, Cumberland struggled to get the bats going against Bethel starter Walker Ward. Wilser Then had him figured out as he went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five runs driven in. However, CU picked up just four hits in total in the game.

Ward picked up the win working 4.1 innings pitched allowing four hits and six runs. Ward did issue five free passes in the game. Klayton Wright tossed two innings of hitless baseball and Wyatt McKee picked up the last two outs in a jam to get his first save of the season.

The Phoenix got off to a strong start in the opener, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After two walks to start the game, Then delivered an RBI double to bring in Drew Dalton-Akiwumi, and Preston Welchel came around to score on a groundout by Dylan LaRue.

Bethel responded with a big five-run second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Zack Griffith and run-scoring hits from Luis Aristud, Jose Olmeda, and Ivan Vega to take control. The Wildcats added two more in the third to extend their lead to 7-2.

Then powered the Phoenix offense, cutting into the deficit with a two-run homer in the third and another in the fifth to bring Cumberland within one at 7-6.

Cumberland had a chance in the seventh loading the bases, but McKee got out of the jam to get the win.

Justin Goldstein (5-2) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs over two innings. Jake Green threw five innings in relief giving up just three hits and one run.

The Phoenix rebounded in the second game with a balanced offensive attack and a strong bullpen performance. The Wildcats got on the board first with an RBI-single from Ivan Vega in the top of the first, but Cumberland answered, tying the game 1-1 in the opening frame on an RBI single by Welchel.

Toshiki Kuriya roped a double to lead off the second and came around to score on a Rafael Garcia single for a 2-1 lead. In the third, Wilser Then bopped his third home run of the day and 10th of the season to push the Phoenix lead to 4-1.

Bethel clawed back with three runs in the fourth, tying the game at 4-4 following an RBI single by Griffith and a triple from Aristud. Cumberland quickly responded in the bottom of the inning as Dalton-Akiwumi's two-run single pushed the Phoenix ahead 6-4.

The Wildcats stayed within striking distance, scoring a run in the fifth and another on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to even the score again at 6-6.

Cumberland took advantage of a Bethel miscue in the bottom half, scoring two unearned runs on a sac fly from Hunter Moser and an RBI double from Welchel to lead 8-6.

Grayson Cole entered in the seventh inning and commanded the game throwing the final three innings for the save.

Carter Rost (4-0) earned the win for Cumberland, allowing six runs, five earned, over six innings.

Cumberland will be back on the diamond on Tuesday at home as CU hosts Bryan College at 2:00 p.m.
