Mannebach Hits 1000 Career Assist Mark as Phoenix Stifle Red Storm

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - - Cumberland Men's Volleyball improved to 15-8 on the season as they took down the Rio Grande Red Storm on the road early this afternoon.

Cumberland broke away from the Red Storm early on in the first set and rode back-to-back four and five point runs out to a massive 20-8 lead as the set came near its close. Kaden Kuehler and Chance Gallardo both had a massive first set with several kills each, but the Phoenix block was near impenetrable.

Rio responded well in the second set to make it a closer match, though the Phoenix were still on their best game. Getting out to 9-9, Cumberland then went on a four point run to grab the momentum they needed to carry them out to a lead which would not reach below three points for the rest of the set, winning the second set 25-19.

The third set looked like it would be the end of the match, with the Phoenix holding a lead for nearly the entirety of the set, but the Red Storm would not go away. With the score sat at 24-20, Cumberland had four straight match points but couldn't put the Red Storm down who went on to win the set, 28-26.

Staring at a possible five set match, Joao Infante and Jacob Whyte both hit incredibly well in the fourth set to give the Phoenix the momentum they needed to pull away. Never trailing for the whole set, it was massive back-to-back kills at 11-11, from the two aforementioned players, that gave Cumberland that push that they needed, going on to win 25-18

On the night the Phoenix not only accrued 49 kills, but also a devastating 16 blocks, forcing the Red Storm to just barely hit at a 10% rate. Whyte and Kuehler both had 7 blocks each, while Infante led the match with 16 kills, though the story of the night was Sam Mannebach hitting the 1000 assist mark for a career.

The senior has been the one best setters in the nation this year and his total of 44 assists tonight gives him a career total of 1,008, with six regular season games left to play still.

Cumberland returns to action quickly with another match tomorrow afternoon, taking on Indiana East in Richmond, Indiana at noon.
