Baseball Rolls to Saturday Doubleheader Sweep over Lourdes

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball used strong pitching performances and timely hitting to pick up a 4-1 win in game one and added to it with a big first inning in game two to get an 8-2 over Lourdes at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium.

Goldstein (4-1) was dominant on the mound, throwing four shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight. Saldana entered in relief to earn his first save of the season, tossing three innings while giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout.  The duo combined to hold the Gray Wolves to just three hits.

The Phoenix offense tallied 12 hits in the game. Hunter Moser, Dylan LaRue, Toshi Kuriya, Trenton Duchsherer, and Aiden McDonald each picked up two hits in the game. Kuriya and Moser each hit doubles with Kuriya's driving in a run late in the game.

The Phoenix plated two runs in the third inning and added insurance in the fifth and sixth.

Cumberland opened the scoring in the third when Preston Welchel delivered an RBI single to right, scoring Hunter Moser. Welchel later came around to score on a base hit from Dylan LaRue, giving the Phoenix a 2-0 lead.

Lourdes got on the board in the fifth, capitalizing on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one. However, Cumberland responded in the bottom half when Toshiki Kuriya ripped an RBI double to right, scoring LaRue to extend the lead to 3-1.

In the sixth, Duchsherer led off with a single and McDonald and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi each singled to load the bases.  Preston Welchel roped a ball to right that ended up being caught for a sacrifice fly to allow courtesy runner Ty Martin to score and push the lead to and final score to 4-1.

Cumberland's offense struck early, and strong pitching secured an 8-2 win in the second game.
The Phoenix jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, backed by solid outings from Quinlan Wiley and Grayson Cole on the mound.

Wiley (4-0) picked up the win, tossing five innings while allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Cole closed out the final two frames, giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Cumberland wasted no time getting on the board, plating five runs in the first inning. Wilser Then started the scoring with an RBI single to left, driving in Dalton-Akiwumi. Kuriya followed with an RBI single of his own before Duchscherer added another run with a base hit through the left side. Gaines Haussin capped off the big inning with a two-run single down the left field line, making it 5-0.

Lourdes got one run back in the third on a sacrifice fly, but the Phoenix responded in the bottom half when Dylan LaRue scored on a wild pitch. Haussin then delivered his third RBI of the game with a single through the left side, bringing home Kuriya for a 7-1 advantage.

Cumberland added another run in the fourth after loading the bases. Trenton Duchscherer drove a deep shot to left, but Lourdes' Landon Brown made a leaping grab to rob him of a grand slam. However, the play still resulted in a sacrifice fly, bringing home a run to extend the Phoenix lead to 8-1.

The Gray Wolves pushed across a run in the sixth, but Cole shut the door in the seventh to seal the win.

The Phoenix racked up 10 hits, with LaRue and Haussin each collecting two. Then, Kuriya, Duchscherer, and Haussin all drove in multiple runs. The team also showed aggression on the basepaths, swiping six bases.

With the two wins, Cumberland improves to 18-4-1 on the season.

The Phoenix and Gray Wolves will wrap up the series tomorrow at noon with a single nine inning game at Woody Hunt Stadium.
