Phoenix Can't Find Way Past Tigers in Tight Contest

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - - The Cumberland Men's Volleyball team hit the road to take on the reigning National Champs, Georgetown College, and was unable to find a way past the Tigers.

Previewing what would be a razor tight match all night long, Cumberland fell behind early by four points but then rallied all the way to get it back to 10-10. The Phoenix managed to grab a brief lead just after tying it up as Joao Infante put away a kill from Abdallah Roshdy to put CU up by one.

Georgetown showed what makes them one of the best teams in the country though, and fought their way back into the match by winning 7 of the next 10 points. After going on that run the Phoenix were only able to bring it within three points one other time down the stretch, seeing the Tigers take the first set, 25-10.

Cumberland responded well in the second set, winning five straight points down 3-4, taking a strong lead early on in the frame. The Tigers responded equally well to the Phoenix's effort, going on run after run to take the lead back on four different occasions, as late as 22-21.

Taking advantage of a service error after Georgetown had tied it up, Cumberland put themselves back in the lead with a solo block from Joao Infante and the Phoenix closed the set out on a Francesco Corradini service ace, 27-25.

The Phoenix took that momentum into the third set, running out to a 10-7 lead. Georgetown then did like they did in the previous set, clawing their way back to tie the match an astounding 12 times and eventually win the set, 26-24.

With a set lead in the match and one more needed for a victory, the Tigers stayed a step ahead in the fourth. After a tie at 1-1, Georgetown were able to pull ahead and did not trail one the rest of the set. Cumberland did manage a run in the late parts of the final set, bringing it all the way back to 23-23, but back-to-back Tiger kills gave them the set and the match.

Joao Infante was a man on a mission again tonight, totaling a match-high 24 kills. Kaden Kuehler and Francesco Corradini both blocked five shots each in the losing effort, while Abdallah Roshdy eclipsed the 40 assist mark yet again.

Cumberland will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Campbellsville to take on more Tigers. The match is set to start at 2 PM.
