Tennessee Wesleyan Completes the Sweep over the Phoenix

ATHENS, Tenn.--Cumberland struck early but couldn't keep pace with a relentless Tennessee Wesleyan offense, falling 17-7 in Sunday's series finale at Athens Insurance Stadium. With the win, the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (32-10) completed a three-game sweep of the Phoenix (29-13-1).

Preston Welchel got the Phoenix off to a fast start, blasting a two-run homer to right in the top of the first to give Cumberland an early 2-0 advantage. However, Tennessee Wesleyan answered with a four-run third inning and didn't look back, scoring in five consecutive frames and racking up 17 hits in the process.

The Bulldogs took control with a pair of two-RBI singles in the third and a solo homer in the fourth, then broke the game wide open with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Jack Stevens and a two-RBI double from Daniel Stewart.

Cumberland fought back with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Welchel and a groundout by Wilser Then, and Dylan LaRue added a solo homer in the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-5. The Phoenix plated two more in the seventh as Then and Gaines Haussin each drove in runs, but Tennessee Wesleyan tacked on two in the bottom half of the sixth and five more in the seventh to get the run rule victory. .

Welchel and LaRue both recorded two hits, with Welchel driving in three runs and LaRue adding one. Hunter Moser reached base three times, scoring three runs and doubling once. Then and Haussin each picked up an RBI.

Carter Rost started for the Phoenix and tossed two scoreless innings before the Bulldogs found their rhythm against the CU bullpen. Kyle Nyblod (1-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs in the third. Cumberland used eight pitchers in total.

The Phoenix return to action next Friday and Saturday as CU travels to Henderson, Tennessee for a weekend at Freed-Hardeman.
