Softball Drops the First Two Games of the Series Against No. 4 Ranked Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Softball Drops the First Two Games of the Series Against No. 4 Ranked University of the Cumberlands

In a tough matchup on the road, the Cumberland University softball team fell 9-1 to Cumberlands (KY), struggling to find offensive rhythm and losing control during a costly fourth inning.

The Phoenix came out quiet in the top of the first, going down in order with no hits. In the second inning, they showed a brief spark. Karsyn France ignited the offense with a single to right field, and shortly after, Karley Daughrity delivered a clutch RBI double to the gap in left-center, bringing France home to tie the game at 1-1. It would be the only run of the game for Cumberland, as their bats fell mostly silent from that point on.

Cumberland's best offensive efforts came in scattered moments. Abby Chappell reached base twice, first with a single in the fourth and later with a walk in the sixth. Ashley Evans also notched an infield single in the third. Daughrity's double was the lone extra-base hit for the team, and outside of the second inning, the Phoenix couldn't string together enough offense to mount a comeback.

While the defense held strong early, things unraveled in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cumberlands exploded for seven runs. Though Cumberland managed to avoid any errors through the first three innings, miscues in the fourth and sixth frames allowed the home team to extend their lead. The Phoenix tried to regroup by making a pitching change mid-inning, which helped stabilize the game temporarily, but the damage had already been done.

On the mound, Carley Clinard entered in relief and held the opposition scoreless in the fifth. However, defensive lapses in the sixth led to another unearned run. Cumberland's pitchers worked through traffic in several innings but were ultimately let down by a lack of run support and key defensive breakdowns.

After a second-inning high point, Cumberland's offense managed only one hit over the final five innings and left a total of six runners on base throughout the game. The Phoenix struck out five times and failed to produce a baserunner in both the fifth and seventh innings.

The top of the first began with Ashley Evans popping out to short, but Karley Daughrity worked a walk to put an early runner aboard. After a strikeout, Daughrity advanced to second on a wild pitch, giving the Phoenix a scoring opportunity, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the frame without damage.

Cumberland's most productive stretch came in the second and fourth innings. In the top of the second, Karsyn France led off with a sharply hit double down the left field line, putting herself in scoring position with no outs. However, the Phoenix were unable to capitalize, as the next three batters were retired in order.

The team broke through in the fourth inning, sparked by Abby Chappell reaching base on a fielding error by the left fielder. France followed with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to move Chappell into scoring position. Sara Brogdon then stepped up and grounded out to the catcher, allowing Chappell to score from third on the play. It brought Cumberland within two runs, trailing just 3-1 at that point.

Anna Lay provided another highlight in the fifth with a well-placed infield single to third base, and she later advanced to second with a stolen base, showcasing both speed and awareness on the bases. However, the Phoenix couldn't bring her around to score, as the inning ended with a strikeout and groundout.

Offensively, Ashley Evans reached base with a single in the third, while France and Lay each collected hits and demonstrated good situational awareness. France's double and sacrifice bunt stood out as two of the more disciplined at-bats of the day. Chappell reached base and scored the team's only run, and Brogdon earned the RBI with a productive out.

Cumberland's momentum was ultimately halted in the bottom of the fifth, when Cumberlands (KY) erupted for six runs on seven hits. Though Cumberland continued to fight, the offensive gap widened too far to overcome.

Despite the loss, there were several encouraging performances for the Phoenix. France's extra-base hit and clean small-ball execution, Chappell's baserunning and run scored, and Lay's ability to get on base and swipe second offered bright spots. With improved consistency and timely hitting, Cumberland will look to bounce back in their next game tomorrow against the Cumberlands for the last game of the series.
