Men's Tennis Get Back to Winning Ways with 6-1 Victory Over Bethel

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland men's tennis took down the Bethel Wildcats with a sweep in singles action to wrap up conference home action.

Having been strong in doubles all season long, the Phoenix were overtaken by the Wildcats as only Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer managed a win, taking court three in a quick 6-3 win.

The Wildcats however took the top court from Gabriel Godoy and Vitor Ferreira, coming back from 5-2 down to upset the Phoenix 7-5. Elisey Kalashnikov and Julian Parada had a chance to take the point for the home side but could not make it past the Wildcats in a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (7-2).

Despite dropping the doubles point, CU rallied to sweep the Wildcats on every court of singles action. Vitor Ferreira didn't let his loss in doubles keep him down long, winning in under an hour with set scores of 7-5 and 6-1. Next up to finish was Hassan Ammar, taking down the Wildcats number three seed in just over an hour, 6-1, 6-4.

Paul-Daniel Meyer and Daniel Wessels followed up those two victories with a pair of their own, first coming from the younger, Meyer, on court four. Being down at 4-3 in the first set, the South African came back to win 7-5, before taking the second set 6-3. His compatriot finished some ten minutes later, taking his first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), then winning his second set, 6-4.

The final two matches of the day to finish were both three-set matches, with Julian Parada winning in a full three-set match. The Colombian won his first set 7-5 but his opponent bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second. Going down to the wire in the deciding third set, Parada struck when the moment was right, breaking his opponent's final service game to win 6-4.

Rounding out the singles sweep for Cumberland, Gabriel Godoy won his first set 6-4, but fell in his second set, 6-3. With every other match having finished more than twenty minutes before and the win clinched for the Phoenix, Godoy would win his match in a third-set match tiebreak, 11-9.

Cumberland will hit the road tomorrow to take on the Freed-Hardeman in their conference regular season finale.
