Men's Volleyball Falls in Three in River States Conference Semifinals

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Cumberland men's volleyball saw its season come to a close Friday night with a hard-fought 3-0 loss to 14th-ranked Campbellsville in the River States Conference semifinals at Great Crossing High School. The Tigers claimed the sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20 to advance to Saturday's championship match against top-seeded Georgetown.

The Phoenix (19-12) battled closely with the second-seeded Tigers (23-7) in each set, but Campbellsville's efficiency at the net proved to be the difference. The Tigers hit .278 for the match, including a blistering .400 in the second set, while Cumberland finished with a .219 hitting percentage.

Jacob Whyte led the Phoenix with 13 kills on a .357 attack percentage, while Joao Infante added 10 kills and Kaden Kuehler chipped in seven on .455 hitting. Francesco Corradini paced the offense with 33 assists and also contributed five digs. Alexander Heuer led the team in digs with 12.

Campbellsville featured a balanced attack, with John-Marcos Gonzalez leading all players with 12 kills on a .550 clip. Ayoube Hamadache and Denzel Madrigal followed with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Alonzo Vega tallied 40 assists spreading the ball around all match. Andrew Ovalle led the team in digs with 12.

The first set went back and forth. The Tigers used a 3-0 run on three Phoenix errors to get up 7-4. Later Campbellsville pushed the lead to four, but Cumberland caught fire to go on a 7-1 run and retake the lead at 14-12. Campbellsville answered with a 3-0 run to retake the lead before a 4-1 run by Cumberland gave CU a 18-16 lead. Cumberland still lead at 21-20, but the Tigers closed the set strong for a 25-22 set score.

Leading 8-7 in the second set, Campbellsville went on a 7-0 run to take all the momentum. Cumberland made a run at it late down by five tacking four straight points to get down by one, but the Tigers and Phoenix went point for point at that point as the Tigers won set two 25-23 to go up 2-0.

The Phoenix again had a lead in the third set up 7-6, but Campbellsville went on a 9-1 run and pushed that out to a 12-4 spurt to take control of the set and sweep the Phoenix.

Despite strong moments and 24 ties across the three sets, Cumberland couldn't string together enough runs to overcome Campbellsville's firepower. The loss ends a strong campaign for the Phoenix, who had a great season posting 19 wins, second-most in program history.
