Cumberland Opens MSC Tournament with 5-2 Win Over Tigers

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Cumberland Baseball opened the Mid-South Conference Tournament with a strong performance, taking down fifth-seeded Campbellsville 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. The win advances the second-seeded Phoenix in the winner's bracket, where they will face the winner of Bethel and Freed-Hardeman tomorrow.

Wilser Then provided the biggest swing of the day with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give Cumberland insurance late. Then finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. Toshiki Kuriya also drove in a run with a double in the third, and Javy Beal added a two-run day, including an RBI triple in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Quinlan Wiley improved to 7-1 on the season with 6.2 strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Kyle Nyblod shut the door for his fifth save, pitching the final 2.1 innings and working out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by inducing a big double play in the ninth.

Cumberland got going in the third as Dalton-Akiwumi worked a leadoff. Moser bunted him over to second base and then the Phoenix struck with back-to-back doubles to score two runs. Then roped a double into the left field corner for the first run and Kuriya followed with a double to right field to push across two and give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead through three.

The Phoenix tacked on one more run in the fourth inning as Dylan LaRue led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Trenton Duchsherer bunted him into scoring position and Javy Beal roped a triple off the centerfield wall. The Phoenix had a chance to score more, but Beal got thrown out at the plate on a groundball in the infield for just one run in the inning.

Campbellsville cut into the lead in the seventh scoring one before Cumberland tacked on two big insurance runs in the eighth. Then lead off the inning with blast to left field and Beal came through with a clutch run-scoring single for a 5-1 lead.

The Tigers tried to rally in the ninth loading the bases before a doubleplay plated a run for the 5-1 final score.

The Phoenix will play the winner of tonight's game, Bethel or Freed-Hardeman, tomorrow at Bowling Green Ballpark.
