LEBANON, Tenn. — Chappell's Late-Inning Heroics Lift Cumberland to 3-2 Win Over Campbellsville
Cumberland struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Evans singled up the middle and later advanced to third. Jacey Hatfield followed with a single to right field, and a defensive miscue by Campbellsville allowed Evans to score, giving the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead.
Campbellsville responded with a run in the third and another in the fourth to go ahead 2-1. But the Phoenix stayed responsive and Maddie Croxford continued to look well in the circle.
The Phoenix and the Tigers both recorded a hit in the fifth inning with a single by Campbellsville and then Karley Daughrity roped a double off of the fence in right center but the Phoenix ended up rolling into a double play that ended the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Evans once again ignited the offense with a lead off single. After a ground out moved her into scoring position, Abby Chappell stepped into the batter's box and crushed a two-run home run to left center, putting the Phoenix ahead of the Tigers 3-2.
The Phoenix defense then shut the door in the seventh, stranding two Campbellsville runners to lock up the win.
Abby Chappell came up big in the clutch, going 2-for-3 with the game-winning home run and two RBIs. Her sixth-inning shot flipped the script and gave Cumberland the lead for good.
Ashley Evans continued to be a consistent spark at the top of the order, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Her hustle on the base paths created pressure that led to runs.
Jacey Hatfield chipped in with a key RBI single and played solid defensively throughout the game.
The Phoenix are back in action again tomorrow against Campbellsville at 12:00 PM for a conference double-header.
