Game Recap: Baseball |

Phoenix down Tigers Twice to Win Conference Series

LEBANON, Tenn.--The Phoenix offense exploded in game one with a 14-4  win, racking up 14 hits and using a five-run first inning to take immediate control. In game two, Cumberland leaned on dominant pitching from Carter Rost and timely hitting to secure a 4-1 victory and get a big conference win over Campbellsville at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium on Tuesday.

The wins push the Phoenix to 29-10-1 overall and 9-3 in Mid-South Conference play, while Campbellsville drops to 26-10 and 5-3 in the MSC. Cumberland has taken sole possession of second place in conference with three conference series' remaining.

Cumberland baseball erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits in game one, using a five-run first inning and a nine-run burst across the fourth and fifth innings to run away with a 14-4 win.

Cumberland wasted no time jumping on the Tigers, plating five runs in the bottom of the first. Hunter Moser got things started with a solo homer to left before the bats rallied. The Phoenix strung together five straight singles to push across four more runs for a 5-0 lead after the first. Toshiki Kuriya, Dylan LaRue, and Rafael Garcia drove in runs during the stretch.

Campbellsville scored an unearned run on a wild pitch in the second, but Cumberland blew the game open in the fourth. Preston Welchel doubled to start the inning and later Kuriya and LaRue walked to load the bases. The Phoenix then took advantage of a costly two out error in left field as Garcia hit a fly ball that was missed allowing three runs to score. Cumberland then added an RBI single from Aiden McDonald to push the lead to 9-1.

CU kept pouring it on in the fifth, racking up five more runs. LaRue delivered again with a two-run double, McDonald added a sacrifice fly, and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi drove in another with a double to center.

Campbellsville scored two in the sixth and one more in the seventh for the 14-4 final.

LaRue finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk, while Preston Welchel went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Kuriya scored three times, and Gaines Haussin added three hits and a stolen base.

On the mound, Justin Goldstein (7-2) picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Marcelo Saldana threw the final two innings in relief.

Carter Rost turned in a masterful performance on the mound and Cumberland made the most of its opportunities at the plate to cap off the series with a 4-1 win.

Rost (5-0) tossed 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He pounded the strike zone all day, throwing 100 pitches and inducing 10 groundouts while stranding multiple Campbellsville runners to preserve the lead.  Kyle Nyblod came on in the ninth and slammed the door shut for his third save of the season. The right-hander struck out two of the four batters he faced and worked around a two-out walk to secure the win

Hunter Moser provided the early spark once again, launching a solo homer to left in the first inning—his second of the day—to give Cumberland a 1-0 lead.

Cumberland added to its advantage in the fifth inning. Trenton Duchsherer walked to lead off the inning and Dalton-Akiwumi dropped a bunt for a base hit, drawing a pitching change. Moser reached on a bunt to load the bases and Wilser Then drove a two-run single to center to extend the lead to 3-0.

Campbellsville scratched across a run in the eighth on a groundout, but Cumberland answered back in the bottom half. After Campbellsville centerfielder Henry Wright robbed Then of a home run in center, Kuriya reached and raced around to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, he scored on a sacrifice fly from LaRue to push the lead to 4-1.

Offensively, Then finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Moser added two hits and scored twice. Dalton-Akiwumi, Haussin, and Garcia each contributed a hit.

Cumberland turned in an error-free game in the field and turned two double plays behind its pitching staff.

The Phoenix have a big non-conference weekend coming up as CU will take on No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan in Athens for a three-game tilt.
