Phoenix Chop Down No. 20 Mighty Oaks for Fifth Ranked Win

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Men's Tennis faced off against the Oakland City Mighty Oaks in a non-conference heavyweight bout this afternoon and chopped down the trees, 5-2.

Doubles play was tightly contested with Paul-Daniel Meyer and Daniel Wessels grabbing the first win of the day at three doubles, taking it 6-4. Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov did not fare so well at two doubles, dropping their match 6-3.

Taking the point for the Phoenix, Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira won at the top spot, coming down to 5-5, where the pair edged out of the Oaks in the end, 7-5.

Finishing his match in less than an hour, Ferreira doubled his win total on the day with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep over the Oakland City number one. Wrapping up next was Hassan Ammar who also took a straight sets victory, though the Mighty Oak made him work for it, 6-4, 6-3.

Needing just one more victory for a win the Phoenix looked to Julian Parada who won at the sixth and final spot, 6-3, 6-3.

Though the match had been clinched several matches had yet to finish and it was the Mighty Oaks who rallied to win two of the final three matches.

Gabriel Godoy was unable to find his way past his opponent at five singles, falling 6-2, 6-3. Grabbing another point for the Phoenix though, Daniel Wessels locked down court two in the first set as he won 6-0, but had to battle it out in a tiebreak for the second set victory, 7-6 (11-9).

The final match to finish was a marathon of a match between Paul-Daniel Meyer and Nelson Ramos on court three. Every set ended in a tiebreak with Meyer taking the first 7-6 (7-5), but the South African dropped the second, 7-6 (7-3), and couldn't find a way to win the match tiebreaker, falling 13-11.

This afternoon's win gives Cumberland their fifth ranked win and sets the Phoenix up well for a big conference match against the ever present Cumberlands Patriots.
