Cumberland Punches Ticket to MSC Championship with 11-4 Win over Patriots

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--For the first time since 2019, Cumberland Baseball is headed to the Mid-South Conference Championship game after a dominant 11-4 win over No. 8 ranked and top-seeded Cumberlands on Friday morning at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Phoenix broke things open with a three-run third and never looked back, plating runs in six of their eight offensive innings and racking up 15 hits in the statement win. With the victory, Cumberland advances to Saturday's MSC title game, riding a three-game tournament win streak.

On the mound, Carter Rost was dealing to improve to 8-0 on the season with a stellar performance against one of the nation's top offenses. The senior tossed 8.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out 11. Grayson Cole came on in relief to record the final two outs and seal the win.

Toshiki Kuriya and Gaines Haussin each had three-hit games driving in a run a piece. Hunter Moser, Preston Welchel, and Trenton Duchsherer each had two hits with an extra base hits each..

Cumberland trailed early, giving up a run in the first and a solo homer in the third to fall behind 2-0. The Phoenix responded immediately in the bottom half of the third. Trenton Duchsherer drew a walk, and after a single from Javy Beal and an infield knock by Dalton-Akiwumi, Moser ripped a double down the line to drive in a run. On the play, a throwing error brought home two more, giving Cumberland a 3-2 lead.

The Phoenix kept pouring it on. In the fourth, Haussin roped a single to get one and two batters later, Duchsherer tripled in a run. Cumberland was fortunate to add another run on a ball hit back to the pitcher with two outs and the Patriots attempted to throw out courtesy-runner Ty Martin, but threw it away for a 5-2 lead.

The knockout punch in the fifth inning when the Phoenix plated four runs. Moser led off the frame getting hit by a pitch and then five straight batters reached on hits, including RBI singles from Wilser Then, Kuriya, and Haussin.

Duchsherer added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, his second RBI of the day, and Haussin scored on a wild pitch moments later to extend the lead to 11-2.

The Patriots scored two runs in the ninth inning on bases loaded walks before finally going down 11-4.

With the win, Cumberland improves to 36-15-1 and will play for the MSC Tournament Championship on Saturday.
