Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Make Early Statement with 4-0 Rout of No. 6 Ranked Rams

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - - The Cumberland men's soccer team opened up their season against the No. 6 ranked Mobile Rams in both team's season opener, only the second time the two sides have ever met.

With so much on the line in both sides' first game of the season, it was a slow burner for the opening parts of the game. Cumberland had their first strong chance after five minutes had come off the clock, seeing Philipp Schmidtke's effort clatter off the post.

Despite that slow start, the game began to turn into a fastbreak matchup as the Rams countered the Phoenix with pace and picked their moments carefully. Cumberland dominated possession for much of the first half, firing off shots from range, but it was a set piece that cracked the egg.

Taking their third corner kick of the first half, Cumberland fired a right-footed delivery into the box and loose hands from the Mobile goalkeeper gave the Phoenix their opportunity. Scrambling in the box for several touches, it was Pau Ortega tapping the goal in to put CU and score on his debut.

Cumberland used that momentum to their advantage, not allowing a shot from the Rams for the next 15 minutes of action, while the first half eventually came to its close with the Phoenix ahead of the No. 6 ranked Rams.

The second half of play flipped the script completely with both sides showing some signs of fatigue, thanks in part to the 9:15 PM kickoff. Counterattacks slowed down and Cumberland allowed the Rams their own parts of possession, electing to absorb some of the pressure and bring their high press back.

Although the game state did slow, Cumberland continued to take advantage of the moments they had and in the 72nd minute the Phoenix were able to double their lead. Miquel Gelabert dribbled the ball down the right wing and cut inside to deliver a second-post cross to Schmidtke whose shot was saved and deftly put away by Luis Cerejo.

Sparking confidence in the side, Cumberland showed that they absolutely mean business going into this season by doubling that 2-0 lead. Cerejo found himself another ball at the edge of the box and shot a missile of his right foot, smashing off the crossbar and in to give CU a 3-0 lead in the 79th minute.

Not even a minute later, Mobile lost the ball almost directly after kickoff and the Phoenix countered at pace. Miquel Gelabert took his defender down the wing and decided to take the shot himself this time around, smashing the ball past the keeper to make it 4-0.

The 4-0 rout gives Cumberland their first win over a top ten ranked team since taking down Lindsey Wilson in the Mid-South Conference Championship game in 2023 when the Blue Raiders were ranked no. 4.

Cumberland will now wait until Saturday to take on Montgomery Tournament hosts, Faulkner University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
