Women’s Soccer Cruise to Fifth Win of the Season in an Eight Goal Rout Over Missouri Baptist University

Box Score ST. LOUIS, MO. - - Cumberland were firing on all cylinders, as they put in an impressive away performance and beat Missouri Baptist University 8-1.

It was a fast start for Cumberland as they put pressure on the Missouri Baptist defense, and it paid off within the first five minutes as a long ball from Seika Stull found Miku Kayama who slotted it past the keeper to make it 1-0. Shortly after a driving run from Kadisha Martina resulted in a Phoenix corner. Martina took the corner which found the head of Ellie Winter to make it 2-0 with only 9 minutes played.

The phoenix enjoyed a large share of possession and kept creating chances, out shooting the Spartans 10-0 in the first 25 minutes. With 16 minutes left, against the run of play a bouncing ball fell to the feet of the Spartans striker who found the back of the net and made the game 2-1.

Cumberland answered back quickly as Seika Stull picked up the ball on the edge of the box, rounded one defender and found the bottom corner with 14 minutes left in the first half. With just a few minutes left in the first half, a long ball from Niamh Warrender found Adelyn Drane who put it right into the path of Allyson Hawkins to tap it in and make it 4-1 going into the break.

The second half started much like the first, with Cumberland having the majority of possession. The Phoenix front three were pressing hard and it almost paid dividends as Martina won the ball and played it to Stull who forced a great save from the Spartans keeper.

Only minutes later Kadisha Martina's work paid off as she picked up on a through ball, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly put the ball in the back of the net to make it 5-1. With 25 minutes left, Klara Bjorkman stepped onto the ball in an advanced position on the left, and played a perfectly timed cross for Adelyn Drane to connect with the header into the bottom right corner.

Only four minutes later, a fast paced Cumberland attack saw Uxia Varela cross the ball in for Adelyn Drane to head the ball into the back of the net for her second on the day, making it 7-1 to the Phoenix. In the remaining few minutes a long range shot from Adeyemi Adebunmi was spilled from the goalkeeper, and Hawkins was the first to react and had a tap-in to see the game out 8-1.

The Phoenix are back in action on Saturday as they face Louisiana State University Shreveport in Louisiana.
