Volleyball Sweep Day One of SAU Invitational

Davenport, Iowa. - - The first game of the day started positively for Cumberland as they defeated Saint Mary 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

The Phoenix finished with a total of 51 kills in the game, Carlee Rogers and Hazel Konkel led the way with 11 each, and Haley Mitchell chipped in with nine. The Phoenix hit six aces in the game, Hailey Jones and Sydney Andrews getting three each while Emma Carter added another. On the defensive end Morgan Snead had 13 digs and Lila Cade had 11. Alei Roper had an impressive hitting percentage of .412. Cumberland finished with a .252 hitting percentage and held Saint Mary to a .116.

The first set saw Saint Mary take the initial advantage getting three points on the board right away. Cumberland quickly woke up and picked up some points of their own and got focused. A four point run saw the Phoenix take an 8-5 lead. Both teams had five point runs later in the set which kept it very close. Unfortunately a number of Cumberland errors late in the set allowed Saint Mary to take the first one 21-25.

Cumberland regrouped and came out determined to take the second set, going up 4-0 right away. Saint Mary battled back and made it difficult for Cumberland to gain a significant advantage, leveling the game 10-10. Nine kills by the Phoenix helped them edge the second set 25-18 including back to back kills by Hazel Konkel to finish the set and a five point run. CU held Saint Mary to a .032 hitting percentage.

The third set was very evenly contested in the opening stages, with there being no more than one point to separate the two teams at 11-12. Cumberland forced a number of errors from Saint Mary and with five kills to add the Phoenix went up 19-15. Carlee Rogers was on fire, as she picked up three big kills in the final stages of the set as the Phoenix took it 25-22.

With only one more set to pick up CU had to attack from the start, and they did that as six of their first seven points were kills. The Phoenix continued on the front foot and got themselves up 15-7. A Saint Mary run of six points helped level the set at 17-17. Cumberland shook it off and went on a run of five points including three service aces from Hailey Jones. Hazel Konkel got the final kill to ensure Cumberland took the set and the game.

The second game of the day Cumberland faced St. Ambrose University. The Phoenix took the win in four sets much like the first game, 27-29, 25-14, 25-17, 25-8. Lila Cade came up big with 10 kills, and Hailey Mitchell continued her form as she added 8 of her own. Morgan Snead was massive on the defensive end with 20 digs, Lila Cade also helped on the defense with 13 kills. The Phoenix finished with a hitting percentage of .213 and held Saint Ambrose to -.007. Morgan Snead had a positive influence from the service line with 4 aces, and Lila Cade again chipped in with three in an outstanding individual performance.

Cumberland came up just short in a tightly contested opening set against Saint Ambrose, falling 29-27. The Phoenix fought back from multiple deficits, tying the set at 27 with a late kill by Brook Jablonski. However, the home side closed it out with back-to-back points to take the early lead in the match.

Cumberland responded quickly, going up 16-11 and forcing the fighting bees to call a timeout. From here the Phoenix didn't look back as they held onto their lead and took the second set with ease, 25-14.

The momentum now shifted and was all with CU, as the team went up 6-0 in the third set. The fighting bees fought back and brought the set to 11-6, however, Cumberland went on another six point run and got themselves some breathing room at 17-6. A Carlee Rogers kill ensured Cumberland took the third set 25-17.

Going into the fourth the Phoenix started exactly the same way, going up 6-0. Some St. Ambrose errors and more positive attacks from Cumberland forced a fighting bees timeout at 11-3. Cumberland went on an eight point run to make it 21-6 and effectively put the match out of reach for St. Ambrose to mount a comeback. Two Alei Roper kills followed by a Morgan Snead ace ended the set 25-8 as the Phoenix took their second 3-1 win of the day.

Volleyball are in action again tomorrow as they face #9 McPherson College, and Dordt University.
